CHARLES JQHANNING TO S1GNJTHE SCALE Situation in v the Plumbers' Strike at This Time.
Charles Johanning, the East Main plumbers of the city who have formed a local union, and all his men who walked out are now working. The situation at the other establishments is practically the same as it was when the men first walked out, and there seems to be a determination both on the part of the master plumbers and the men to fight to the last ditch before either will give in. Tlie men who are now out, state that they will never return to work unless their organization is recognized as a union. The Craighead company has recognized the nine-hour work, ten hour pay proposition, but will not sign the agreement recognizing the union. Wm. II. Johnson and Wm. Waking voluntarily recognized the union some time ago. The plumbers now out have no more understanding with the Meerhoff company, than the day on which they walked out, according to their own statements. AN ALL AROUND ATHLETE. Ernest Ross Iloldson, a graduate of Purdue University, '04, who won his letter while at that ' institution In baseball, football and basketball, was in the city Monday, for the purpose of putting in his application for the po sition of athletic instructor at Earlham college, to succeed Walter Wil son. Iloldson nas nau iiu cipeiicuw; in track and field events but otherwise he would bo a most proficient instruuetor. Iloldson was the best all round ath lete while at Purdue and was one of two men to win the varsity letter in three branches of athletics. He came here at the instigation of the Earlham faculty. Hayes were held this morning at Cadillac, Michigan. The body will arrive here tomorrow morning at 4:40 and will be taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. H. J. Pohlmeyer, 106 S. 14th street, where friends may call at any time to view the remains. Thursday morning at 9 o'clock further services will be held at St. Mary's church. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery. PLANS ARE MADE FOR MEMORIAL DAY. Committees from the Coeur de Lion, Triumph and Iola lodges, Knights of Pythias and the Uniform rank, met Monday night to discuss the plans for the Uniform Rank memorial day exercises, which will be held Sunday, June 16. The subordinate lodges will furnish a band of their own, and an effort will be made to get a large turnout of Knights to march in the parade. Williams has received a telegram announcing the sudden death of his brother-in-law, Archibald Mercer, last Saturday at Los Angeles, Cal. Mr. Mercer was born in Cambridge City but went to California about j twenty-five years ago. Miss Emma Williams, He married i formerly em- i ployed at the John Y. It was thought at first that Mensler would be shy at the bat but the last two games played his hitting has been the feature of the games. Giants Lease a Park. The Giants, the well known local colored baseball team, will be in the field again this season. It is announced by the management of the Giants that a park has been leased in the Beallvlew addition and that work on the new park will be started this ; week so that the park can be opened ; early in June. It is stated that the : new park is about two squares from the end of the car line on Eighth street and that the company has promised to continue this line to the entrance of the ball park.
