A RIOfABLE ACHIEVEMENT The Palladium and Sun-Telegram Today Carries the Record Amount of Classified Advertisements Ever Carried by a Richmond Newspaper. . . . . . - .

Below is reproduced identically as it appeared last year the classified adver tisement column; of the Palladium. As can readily be seen the head amount ed to more than the advertisements did. These classified advertisements appeared on May 26, 1906, just a year ago today. On this same page are the classified advertisements for today. Compare those of this day last year with those for today. Last year there were only twelve classified ad vertisements- altogether. Today there re 204 classified advertisements, an Increase over May 26th, last year of 192 classified advertisements. The number of classified advertisements carried on this day a year ago would not occupy more space than a quarter of a column. The classified advertisements tarred today, as you can planly see, occupy more than five columns. The great increase in classified advertising illustrates very plainly the fact that classified advertising increases in a ratio with the increase in circulation. A year ago the old Palladium with less than two thousand subscribers carried only twelve classified advertisements. , Today the Palladium and Sun-Telegram with a circulation of over 6,800 carries 204 classified advertisments. During thi3 year, since the 26th of May last, the circulation of the paper has increased about three and one-half times, and the classified advertisements have increased over 17 times. Of course, from this it can be seen that the classified advertising haa increased proportionately greater than the circulation. This, however, is easily explained. Tne people of Richmond and vicinty are be-

coming educated to the great possibil-'That

ties in classified advertising. They are recognizing its two great advantagesthe great number of people who read classified advertisements and the very small cost of inserting such advertisements. Classified advertisement readers may almost be said to form a class of people by themselves. They are people who have in the past inserted classified advertisements and have formed the habit of looking in those columns regularly. Then again there are people who in the past have picked up tome good bargains from the adver-

READ THIS! Wanted, Found and Lost, in which personal gain does not enter, are inserted in these columns free, providing they are not over fifteen (15 words in length. No business advertisement inserted free of charge. Advertisers will do well to remember that letters directed to Initials Only are not delivered through the postoffice.

ISth and d-lt Lawyers as Will Makers. Ia scribbling his will ou a sheet of rough foolscap the late Lord Davey showed the lawyer's traditional distaste for elaborate testaments. Lord Mansfield found half a sheet of note paper ample for the disposal of all his worldly possessions. Sir James FltzJames Stephen's will was a model of brevity, for it began and ended In thirteen words, and a dozen lines served to dispose of Lord Russell of Killowen's estate of nearly 150,000. The late Lord Grlmthorpe shewed a flm contempt for convention in scribbling three of hjs fourteen codicils on the backs of an old letter, a dinner invitation and a circular respectively. Lord St Leonard put his last testament & carefully away that the most diHgeni search failed to discover it. Lord St Heller provided fees for his lawyer by tearing a sheet out of his will, ano H- C. Richards. K- C, did his "cloth'an equally good turn by leaving a will full of interlineations, while Sergeant Maynard deliberately left an ambiguously worded testament in order that certain legal questions that had puzzled him when living should be settled when he was dead. Westminster Gaeette. The word "bumper," meaning a flrtnkIng vessel, derived Its origin from the Roman Catholic religion. It was the custom in England in ancient times to drink the health of the pope after dinner in a full glass of wine. This was called "au bon pere," from which we Jiave the contraction "bamper.".I : - .

and, remembering their past experienc es, keep steady track of the classified advertisements and look for other bar gains. There are still other people who read the classified columns as a matter of news. And as a matter of fact classified advertisements, as well as display advertisements are real news Display advertisements tell the news of the stores and classified advertise ments tell a great deal of news about the people and their needs. By their Increasing use of classified advertisements the people of Richmond and vicinity are simply going through what the people of every other pro gressive community in the country have gone through. Pick up any good newspaper from an outside city and it will contain from one to ten pages of classified advertising, according to the size of the city in which the paper is published. For instance, the Indian apolis newspapers carry from four to six pages daily of classified advertisements, showin-jr how highly the people of Indianapolis have been educated to look upon classified advertisements It is safe to say that before the end of the present year the people of Rich mond will have been educated in the use of classified advertisements, to such an extent that the Palladium and Sun-Telegram will carry not less than a page of classified columns daily In looking at the classified columns of a year ago. reproduced below: it will be noticed that we declared that Palladium classified advertisements would bring results. To verify the truth of that statement just glance at the greatly increased columns of classi f ied advertisements carried today. shows what the people of Richmond and vicinity think of Palladium and Sun-Telegram classified advertisements. If anything possesses mer it, it becomes popular and the great number of classified advertisements carried by this paper, proves that It is popular with classified advertisement users. For further proof of this fact we have only to mention the undisput ed fact that the Palladium and Sun Telegram carries from two to three times as many classified advertise ments as any other newspaper published In Richmond or Eastern Indi ana.
