There are sufficient people in England and Scotland paying the annual tax imposed by the inland revenue upon the use of armorial bearings to produce the sum of $:iTA mm m each year. The great bulk of thrs sum is paid by people who care not an atom either about their family or their arms, but pay the tax regularly simply- because they have their carriages or plate heraldically decorated,- The really old families of the realm, however, u'xe armorial emblems for decorative purposes to an extent almost incredible in the eyes of those familiar with them only on note paper, table silver an J carriage panels.

The Pharos of Alexandria, which was regarded as one of the seven wonders of the world on account of its grandeur and utility, is perhaps the first lighthouse of wnich we have any definite description. It stood on the island of Pharos, at the entrance of the harbor of Alexandria, and is said to have been constructed about three hundred years before the Christian era by Sostratus Cnidius and was dedicated to the ' Gods protectors of the safeguard of sailors." The height of the original tower is given as 4-"V feet, but Josephus writes that the light was visible at a distance of about thirty-four miles. This would have necessitated a height of about 550 feet.

WORTH WEIGHT IN GOLD. President Merrill has received a price list of wild animals from Louis Ruhe, 243 Grand street, New York. Mr. Ruhe is a famous wild animal

dealer and he sent his price list to Mr. Merrill on learning that the local board of public works was contemplating enlarging the zoo at Glen Miller park. It is of general interest to know the value of some of the animals that are gazed at by hundreds of people ever time a circus shows here. Mr. Ruhe offers a tame elephant for $1,400; zebras at $650; a two year old lion at $250 and a seven year old lion for $500. Leopards came at $175, hyenas at $75; a female polar bear for $250, pumas for $150. Little rcarmozette monkeys bring $7 a pair while a baboon is worth $20. Little ringtail monkeys are priced $9 each. The board will order several monkeys and it is probable that some wild animal like the leopard or the puma will be purchased. The board would like to get an elephant but these big animals seem to be worth

their weight in gold.

One of the animal curiosities of South America is the "oil bird." It breeds in rock caves on the mainland, and one of its favorite haunts Li the Island of Trinidad. It lays its egg3 in a nest made of mud. and the young birds are prodigiously fat. The natives melt the fat down in clay pots, and produce from it a kind of butter. The caves inhabited by the birds are usually accessible only from the sea, and the hunting of them is sometimes an exciting sport. Youth's Companion.

She rises early to greet the morn. The dashing girl of the auto car. With cheeks that rival the damask ros And eyes outshining the evening star, (n a motor coat and a flowing veil, Ere the city kindles its breakfast fires Sha takes a spin in her swift machine. The wondrous steed that never tires. She Is off at last like a lightning flash.

With waving kerchief and dimpling

And blackberry vines and wild rose

briers Reach out In vain on the country road To touch the rims of the rolling tires. Her slender fingers are firm and true

Her head Is cool, and her eyes are clear, And her nerves are tempered and tens

With a merry party of friends she speeds

By shady forests and windy byres. Where cattle come to the bars to gaze At flying tonneau and twinkling tires. Her practiced ear is the first to hear When the even pur of the motor "skips;" She is out and down in the dust at once. The charming chauffeuse with cherry lips. She knows exactly the tool to use And the length of time that the work requires. And soon the ribbon of road again Is reeling off from beneath the tires. 8he loves the car that has borne her far Through many a fair and flowery scene; A thousand pleasures have made it dear And bound her heart to the big machine. A single blast of the brazen horn Is all the music her soul desires. And she points with pride to the sign of power. The breadth of base of the rubber tires. She was wooed and won in the summer time "While racing under the silver moon. And the snowy satin and frosty lace Of bridal garments will robe her soon. And the happy lovers have planned to go. Although the' present universal habit f smoking is of comparatively recent

date, the use of tobacco was carried to

a great excess when it was first introduced. The old time citizens smoked even in church. All such offenders were solemnly excommunicated by Urban VIII in 1024. and again by Innocent XII in 1(KK, when the practice seems to have extended to Rome itself. There was William Breedon, too, vicar of Thornton. England, "a profound divine, and absolutely the most polite person for nativities in that age" of whom the" astrologer Lilly says that "when he had no tobacco he would cut the bell ropes aand smoke them.
