Flattest After an Apple and Coolest After a Peppermint Drop. "Water is the finest drink in the world," said the epicure in little things, "but not every one knows how to get the most enjoyment out of drinking it. "For instance, water should never be drunk immediately after an apple has been eaten, for as a beverage it then bas a taste more flat and insipid than as if it had been taken from a cold teakettle. "On the other hand, there is nothing to my miud that makes water taste more cool and refreshing (not counting
actual thirst) than to eat a peppermint drop before taking a drink of it. "And, while peppermint stands at the head, a drink of water is particularly and noticeably good after any wafer or lozenge. Popcorn, on the other hand, takes all the animation out of a subsequent swallow of water. "Nor do bread and water go well together. The water takes the sweetness out of the bread, and the bread takes the liveliness out of the water and makes it flat beyond degree. "The tyrant who first hit upon bread and water as a prison fare of punishment knew his business. "The enjoyment of a drink of water varies, too, with what you drink it from. You would not offer to a sick person a drink of water In a cup, but rather in a glass, the thinner the better. The fact that the water itself In all Its limpid clearness Is present to the sense of sight stimulates an expectation that is gratified along with the sense of taste. "I have frequently observed men about to drink some other beverage than water, and it appears to be a very common habit with them to regard the liquid steadily for some sec
onds before swallowing it, often hold
ing it on a level with their eyes in order to see It as clearly as possible. i "Surely this lesson should not be lost upon the man who knows that there is no drink like water. While you are j drinking it enjoy It. i j
"For my own part, I like water from a big tin dipper even better than from a thin tumbler, but best of all drinking dishes for me Is a newly made birch bark dipper, all the better if I have made it myself. "Dip a full dipper from the center of the bubbling spring, take a look to see how limpid It Is against the clean yellow freshness of the dripping dipper, put your lips to the water itself and then take one of the sweetest gifts the gods provide." Brooklyn Citizen.

BEAUTY HINTS.
To reduce your flesh Increase your troubles. To develop a bust get on the wrong side of the market. Nails which do not yield readily to the manicure may. be driven in with a hammer. Brilliancy may be imparted to the complexion by powdering with diamond dust. To remove freckles pry them gently out with a nut pick. Should this fail try blasting. The drooping lash, so much affected by some, may be encouraged by sitting up late o' nights. Falling hair may be aToided by stepping nimbly aside whenever you see it coming your way. Ilair on the lips may sometimes be avoided by requiring the yeuag man to shave before calling. When crow's feet will not yield to massage, fill them suddenly with cement and smooth quickly with a trowel. Bohemian Magazine.

Repertoire at the New Phillips. Owing to the demand that exists for the performance of "The Unwritten Law," at the New Phillips, by the Desmond company, it was decided to continue the performance through this afternoon and also tonight. The performance of this evening will be the final one of this piece and affords an opportunity for those who have not yet seen it to do so. For Friday and Saturday the bill will be "A Desperate Woman." Combined with the
specialties that are offered this week, New Phillips patrons are receiving the same liberal allowance for their money that has characterized the several weeks of the Desmonds' stay at this house. Repertoire at the Gennett. "An American Lady" was the offering at the Gennett this afternoon and tonight the Norths will close their
engagement with "A Girl Detective", one of the most interesting of their plays. As usual, ten dollars in gold will be given away. Last night the company made a most pleasing presentation of Nat Goodwin's famous comedy, "Turned Up." A most interesting motion picture is being shown, dealing with the Hatfield-McCoy fued in Kentucky. The Norths have made a favorable and lasting impression on Gennett patrons. They have promised to return next season. Mary Mannering Gennett.
The production of Mary Mannering's I
new American play "Glorious Betsy" by Rida Johnson Young, author of "Brown of Harvard" at the Gennett Friday night is going to prove an
event of paramount Importance in theatricals. M'ss Mannering, who this season is appearing under the direc
tion of the Shubert management, has
been given a most adequate production, and a superior company and this beautiful woman and successful act
ress has scored another great success. This charming actress will personate that loveliest of American womenElizabeth Patterson, the famous beauty and wit of Baltimore, who married Lieutenant Jerome Bonaparte, the brother of the emperor, during his visit to this country on official business in connection with the Louisiana purchase by the United States. "Faust" Gennett. i Porter J. White's representative's instructions to the Geinett manager is to clear his stage of everything, including all scenery, mechanical effects and furniture, as they carry everything from a thunder sheet to a $10,oX) garden set, in which there are over square feet of scenery used and eight calciums, with a car load of effects. "Faust" will appear on Saturday, matinee and night.

SOME SPECIAL FEATURES
A great deal has been said and printed about the coming of the Barnum & Bailey circus to this city on Saturday, May 11, and interest in the event seems to be general throughout the community. That a performance of unusual merit, and one replete with features of a novel and unusually sensational character may be anticipated with confidence, is evidenced from the management's announcement of the di
versified entertainment prepared for the current tour. From this announcement these interesting facts are taken: There are 300 performers, and they come from all parts of the world. Among them are the Carmen Troupe of high wire specialists; the Steves, who introduce a novel Tremplin act; the Vorlop Tourbillon dancers; the Xovellos, Grunatho, LaMont and other acrobatic families; the Imperial Vien
nese Troupe of aerialists, comprising ten' mid-air experts; a long list of well-known riders embracing Josie DeMott ,w ho turns somersaults on a running horse "just like a man." the Stickneys, the Rooneys, W". F. Melrose, Fred Derrick, Win. DeMott, Sisters Meers, Dallie Julian, Ella Bradna, Minnie Johnson and many others. The trained animal numbers introduce Manuel Herzog's trained horses; three herds of acting elephants; troupes of trained sea-lions, the only riding seal, dogs and ponies, and other interesting acts of this character. . The special sensational features include the "Dip of Death," which introduces a young American girl in a fortyfoot ride through space in an inverted autocar, the "Two Twirls of Terror," in which the Boiler Bros, accomplish revolutions in space on bicycles. Capt. Carl Howelsen in startling feats of ski-sailing, and several other pronounced "thrillers."
