MARKETS
Richmond. HOLDING ON' TO WHEAT. HARD TO GET IT AWAY THE FARMERS. FROM As a Result the Market Has Advanced And Eighty Cents Is Now Offered. . Farmers are holding their wheat, according to the statements of local grain men, and it is a hard proposition to induce them to part with it at present prices. As the result of the shortage of wheat, the market has risen two cents on the bushel, making the quotations offered 80 cents. It is said that many of those farmers now holding wheat think the quotations will go as high as $1.00 before harvest, and with them holding back their grain, it is highly probable the figures will soar in that neighborhood. Eighty cents is the highest figure which wheat quotations have reached in many months. Cows, common and good, have declined twenty-five cents on the hun dred pounds. PROVISIONS AT RETAIL. Act3 of air line officials are questioned and an accounting asked. In event an accurate accounting cannot be had a receiver will be asked for. The bill says the company has an illegal capital stock of two hundred millions. "PEIIIISf" MAKING INCREASED PROFITS Road Asks Tax Board Not to Raise the Assessment Against It. WILL CAUSE SHRINKAGE. REPRESENTATION OF CHICAGO &. ERIE SAYS THE 2-CENT FARE LAW WILL "CRIMP" ITS INCOME. Indianapolis, May 6. G. C. Urquhart, real estate and tax agent for the Pennsylvania lines, was before the state tax board and suggested that th? assessment fixed by the board last year be allowed to stand. He said that the gross and net earnings of te Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis railroad company and the Pittsburg,

On the Ft. ttayne Road the increas3 in gross earnings was 11.12 per cent, and in net earnings 12.35 per cent. "We do not come before this board to make a poor mouth for our railroad." said Mr. Urquhart. "We are satisfied with the present assessment. In Ohio this year the state tax board kept the assessment at last year's fig-J ii roc nnrl In Wocf Vircin to T xira c r? v-n ! to understand that the same things would be done there." Will Cause Shrinkage. The enforcement of the 2-cent fare law in Indiana will cost the Chicago & Erie railroad, $00,000 a year, accord ing to W. O. Johnson, general counsel for the road, who appeared before th2 state tax board. Mr. Johnson told the board that the gross earnings of the road from purely Indiana local business during the year were $134,996.54. The taxes paid in Indiana were $S 2,000, or 60 per cent, of the total local earnings in Indiana. The road, he said, had never made any money. Since the reorgani zation in 1S90 a deficit of $3,836,000 had been piled up. Recent legislation in Indiana, he said, would prove another burden to the railroads. He cited the full-crew law and the sixteen-hour law as being especially burdensome, and said that even the trainmen themselves were opposed to the enforcement of the six-teen-hour law. He said the trainmen were holding meetings throughout the state and that they would petition the Indiana railroad commission, not to enforce this law. Stars Played the Better. The Stars, captained by Roy Mull, defeated the Arkes ball team, cap tained by Herbert Stegman, at Fifteenth and South E streets, Sunday. The score was 10 to 15.
Y.M. C. A. MEETING TO HOLD TONIGHT It Is Probable That a Board Of Directors Will Be Chosen at That Time.
SITE YET TO BE CHOSEN. LEDGERS TO AID IN THE COLLECTION OF SUBSCRIPTIONS WILL SOON BE PLACED IN THE VAR IOUS BANKING HOUSES. " Those men who have taken the foremost lead in the Y. M. C. A. campaign in this city, will meet at the Y. M. C. A. headquarters tonight and it is highly probable a board of directors will be selected to take charge of the active work of securing a site for the local association, as well as superintend the construction of the building. As yet such matters have not been thought of by the members of the executive committee, as they have had too much to attend to in raising money for the proposed building. The site for the structure has not yet been selected, but the announcement of such will be expected within the course of the next few days, after the board of directors has had time to fully consider the nanner. Great care will be taken to get the proper men on this board. The executive committee will also report as to how much money it has raised on the $6,000 pledged for completion of the $100,000. Secretary Brown with thcaid of the committee, will soon complete ledgers. which will be placed in all the banks of the city, and the work of collecting the amounts pledged to the cause, will be left entirely with these financial institutions, a record being kept on the ledgers furnished by the Y. M. C. A. people. There are many details which have to be worked out and completed before the building and site can be given any great consideration. CHILDREN JGIVEN SEEDS Indications for Great Interest In Flower Culture. The teachers of the city schools distributed the flower seeds offered by the Aftermath this morning. The varieties purchased by the club, and which will be entered in the contest, were sold for the nominal sum of one cent per package, while the government seeds were given free to the children. The demand for the seeds was great, which is a good indication that interest in the contest which will be held in September, will be greater than ever before. RECEIVER RETIRES FROM THE C. I. & E. With the absorption of the C. I. & E. by the Pennsylvania syndicate no changes have been made in the offices, but many are expected forthcoming at an earjy date. The transportation offices of the road probably will be removed from Muncie to Logansport by the first of next month, an4 the accounting offices will go to Pittsburg.
