The tear; stoa in ner eyes as sne spoke, but he bad turned away as if
unable to deny his latent unbelief, oth
c-rwise her face might have betrayed her even then. She felt that It must do so In the end. It was but another question of time. Such interviews left her spirit prostrate, her heart worn out
with beating, and yet she sought them
herself. The craving for news of Tom
only deepened with the sense of his
iruilt. When Daintree was absent, the
girl counted the hours till his return.
When he returned, if she was not there t meet him it was In order that he might think her less eager to hear than
he to te!L And once when he not only thought so, but told her what he
thought in his touchiest manner, it was
a great moment for the actress, who
was ceasing to feel ashamed of her part, what with custom and the dire
necessity of it.
For now more than ever did Claire
trust to the genius of the great magi
cian retained for the defense. That
vague power was the oue hope left for
Iter to cling to. and cling she did with
nil the might of aching heart and tortured mind. Claire's notions of a trial were exceedingly simple, although her father had stood his within the year. On the other hand, her belief in the efficacy of counsel was unbounded, because Mr. Harding had been defended by a former officer of the crown, and the charge had fallen to the ground, and everybody vowed it was the fine defense, combined with Innocence at least everybody whose opinion Claire was in the way of hearing. Mr. Sergeant Culllford had not been solicitor general, but Claire was told that In a criminal case his rival did not exist. One night she heard that Culliford had accepted tho brief, the next that he
had probably earned his fee already, though Basset t would admit nothing of
the kind, but complained instead of his
own treatment at the barrister's hands.
The fact was that Tom ought to have made a statement before the
magistrate. Then the defense woulc
have had something to work upon at the trial. As it was they had nothing until the learned sergeant devised v means of obtaining a statement at the eleventh hour. He went to Newgate made Tom give him his version of th Interview with Blaydes and of hi subsequent proceedings; disbelieve every word, but kept nodding so en; couragingly with his ugly, inscrutable attentive face that Tom received t!;' very opposite Impression and told hi tale with some rplrit and a gleam o hope. The great man heard him out then glared at Basett (who had give him a certain look) and addressed th prisoner in a kindly undertone. "That's all very well." said he. TL only pity is that we didn't have it e.

and who did not fall to let Claire hear it too. Upon her meanwhile the strain was beginning to tell. More than once she
was within an ace of breaking down at a telltale moment. And Just when her nerves were at their highest pitch and the situation hardly to be borne there came the new development which well nigh turned her brain. It began with a comparatively small matter, the unprovoked insolence of Claire's maid; but this was the growth of days, not a sudden thing, though it was only when her Jangled nerves could endure it no longer that Claire whipped out her purse, put a month's wages on the dressing table and bade

"We shall see," said Claire, moving
over to the bell.
"I wouldn't ring, miss, If I were you."
"Then will you go? You have been

"I wouldn't do that, miss, either, or

The Pills Have Cured the Disease in Almost Every Form and Even in Advanced Stages. Rheumatism is a jainful inflammation of the muscles or of the coverings of the joints and is sometimes accompanied by swelling. The pain is sliarp and shooting and does not confine itself to any one part of the bodv. but after
settling in one joint or muscle for a

His. LUen A. Russell, of South Goff
St., Auburn, Me., says: "I had been sick for fifteen years from impure blood, brought on by overwork. My heart was weak and my hands colorless. I was troubled with indigestion and vomiting spells, which came on every few months. I had no appetite and used to have awful
fainting spells, falling down when at my work. I frequently felt numb all
over. My head ached continuous! v for
five years.
"About two years ago I began to feel rheumatism in my joints, which became so lame I could hardly walk. My joints were swollen and pained me terribly. "Dr. Williams Pink Pills were recommended to me by a friend, after I had
tailed to get well from the doctor's treatment. When I began taking the pills, the rheumatism was at its worst. I had taken only a few boxes, when the headaches stopped and not long afterward I felt the pain in iy joints becoming less and less, until there was aone at all. The stiffness was gone and I have never had any return of the rheumatism." Dr. Williams' Pink Pills have cured such diseases as nervous and general debility, indigestion, nervous headache, uenralgia and even partial paralysis and locomotor ataxia. Indianapolis, May 3. The action of the supreme court in deciding that county commissioners must not employ "tax ferrets" for an undetermined compensation, to be based on a per
centage of the taxes collected, cripples the "tax ferret" law, it is thought, in
such way as to make it useless.
More than this, the decision paves
the way, it is said, for suits to recover
moneys paid to county treasurers as a
result of operations by "tax ferrets," working under contracts now held to
be illegal. If this interpretation is
correct, scores of persons, who have been compelled to tfay by the ferrets
will be aLle to go into court and sue
for the money that they had been
forced to surrender.
The decision relates that all con
tracts of the kind made between county commissioners and "tax ferrets"
are subject to tne provisions or tne county reform law, and that the commissioners must not bind the county to pay any more money for the services
of a "tax ferret" than has already been appropriated for that purpose by the county council. The act of 3905,
lu is asserted, which provides tor , a
distribution of the expense of hiring "tax ferrets'' does not affect this rule.

"And what Is your object. Hannah?" said she at last. "Suppose they put me in the witness box, what would you gain by it? You probably think I would do anything to avoid the exposure. Cincinnati, and it is expected that the business of the road will, all be transacted from Chicago by May 15. Official announcement will be made before the end of this week, by which time the work of dismantling the com
pany's offices in the Carew building
will be well under way. The company has taken a long-term lease on the commodious offices in ths Elsworth building and these are now being put in shape for occupancy by the new tenant. All that will be left for Cincinnati is the office of District Passenger Agent Frank Landmier, Commercial Freight Agent J. J. Johnson and the city ticket office. It is said the establishment of the general offices of the C. C. & L., in
(Chicago, will in no wise tend to estab
lish closer relations between that road
and the Wisconsin Central, as has sev
eral times been suggested, but that the
two roads will be operated absolutely independent of each other.
