SCHOOLS TO OPEN ON SEPTEMBER 9TH Will Continue Seven Months in Wayne County. -
EDUCATION BOARD MEETS. Sixteen of the twenty-two members cf the Wayne County board of education met in semi-annual session at the court house. The committee on property mads a report suggesting several things concerning the upkeep of school property during the summer vacations. The report of the committee on school terms recommeuding that winter term be seven months, school opening September 9, and clos ing-for two weeks during the Christ mas holidays, was adopted. A motion to allow teachers pay during the five legal holidays occuring during the school term was allowed. Tk resolution of the teachers to have one Fri day in each October on which to hold the meeting of the Wayne County Tea chers association was voted down. L. S. Bowman was re-elected secretary and C. E. Potter was re-elected treasurer of the board. The reports of the school enumeration are not yet complete and will not be. announced until Saturday. DAILIES TIED UP BY ST Pressmen at St. Louis Have Gone Out Because of Existing Differences. St Louis, May 2 Strike of pressmen on all big dailies at noon today tied up the town and left it without one metropolitan newspaper. International officers ordered the men not to strike and now threaten to revoke their charter. Pressmen on the PostDispatch struck at 11 o'clock, and when they found the noon edition of that paper contained a , statement of the controversy, the pressmen on the Star-Chronicle went out at noon. The high school history classes which have been -busy writing autobiographies, for the last few days, has finished them. It is expected they will make very interesting reading. The play grounds are now open for the fir3t time for the benefit of the high school students. The regular mghts for the high school will be Tuesday's and Thursday's. Circular Letter Prepared. The following circular letter is being prepared in the commercial department to be sent to all the homes of high school boys in the city: High School, May 2, 1907.. The state high school field meet will occur May 18, on Reid Field. High school boys from many cities of the state will be here. Richmond is to entertain them, probably over night. TH OF iPBIL WHS UNPLEASANT It Was One of the Most Disagreeable Experienced in Many Years. The month of April this year, was one of the most disyeeable with which the citizens of Rimond have had to contend in recent years. March weather prevailed during the entire month, accordingto the records, kept at the local pumping station by voluntary observer, Walter Vossler. There were eleven days on which rain fell and three upon . which snowflew. There were five clear days, fifteen cloudy days and ten partly clear. There were thirteen days when the thermometer sank below the freezing point, while last year the highest record only reached four. The total amount of rainfall for the month was 2.57 inches and there was 2.8 inches of snow. The snow last year in April was of minus quantity as old King Winter did not make his appearance in this manner at any time. The rainfall for last year was 1.09. Joe Werts, the young man "who was taken off a Panhandle train at an early hour Wednesday morning in a dazed condition, evidently from the effects of drugs, has been allowed to go to his home in West Alexandria, O. He has recovered from the effects of his experience. Wednesday night Chief Bailey was informed over the telephone by the marshal at West Alexandria that young Werts bore an excellent reputation and asked that he be allowed to return home. The mystery surrounding his apparently drugged condition still exists. BURTON GAINES BUYS OUT FRANCIS DRAPER Becomes Half Owner of the Auto Inn Garage. MAY ENLARGE BUILDING. Burton Gaines has purchased tbe half interest of Francis W. Draper in I the Auto Inn. and hereafter he, with Laurin Whitesell will conduct the business at the garage. He; is efficient in his line and has a host of J friends. Under the new management there is every reason to believe the hnainpss will stow. Alreadv the srarase has so many storage cars that there is little surplus room for tourists. It is quite likely that the building will be enlarged in order to accommodate the increasing business anticipated for this summer. The firm has the agency for several well known machines and already has a number of prospective buyers. Two Masonic Candidates. Webb lodge of Masons gave the en tered apprentice degree upon a class of two candidates Wednesday night. Strikers Are Still Out. The striking boiler makers at the Gaar-Scott plant and the striking cut ting room men at the Wayne works have not yet returned to work. Admitted to Easthaven.
