When Completed Will Rival St. Louis Fair W. W. Richardson, assistant general passenger agent for the Pennsylvania lines, with headquarters in Indianapolis, was in the city Tuesday calling on local Pennsylvania officials. Mr. Richardson has just retured from the Jamestown exposition, and -states that although the great fair is now incomplete, in the course of five weeks it will bloom forth in all its glory and will be a fair of credit to any country. He said that as soon as everything is completed, the fair will rival the St, Louis exposition.

Indianapolis, May 1. Reports from New York to the effect that a deal
had been made whereby the Independ
ent Telephone system of Indiana and the Indianapolis Telephone company
would be swallowed up in a big Bell
merger developed the information that the Bell telephone company and the Independent telephone companies of Indiana have been considering propositions looking to a consolidation of
their business out in the state. The report, however, that the Inde
pendent companies and the Indianapolis Telephone company were about to
be absorbed by the Bell was denied by
Indianapolis officials of all the com
panies.
Relative to this rumor A. C. Lindemutb, president of the Indiana Independent Telephone association, and
who was here Tuesday, said that no such deal had been made or contem
plated.
"This rumor," said Mr. Lindemuth,
"has probably originated from the fact
that recently certain Bell representa
tives have proposed to abandon the en-
tire local telephone field in Indiana to
the Independent companies upon con
ditions that the Independents take
care of the Bell's long distance busi
ness within the state."
If this consolidation of business out
in the state should be effected Mr. Lindemuth says he believes It would make the way clear eventually for a consolidation of the Indianapolis telephone company and the Bell interests. It would be folly to continue competion in Indianapolis when business out in the state had been merged, he said. And even if a consolidation were not formed it would be necessary to have some sort of traffic agreement, he
says. If the long distance business of the Bell should beNhandled over the state from the independent exchanges it would be necessary to have some sort of agreement stating just what per cent of the toll messages should be sent over the lines of each. The rumor that the Bell interests were to take over the Independent companies in Indiana, originated in the fertile minds of the managers of the Bell and Central Union stock manipulators who wished to float a $40,000,000 securities loan in Boston and New York, and thought that by starting this rumor the loan would be easily secured. The stock on Bell and Central Union stocks rose from 118 to 125 on the Wall street market, which
shows the effect such a rumor has on the financial interests. "The independent, companies will not take over any portion of the Bell system in this state, unless the Bell and Central Union interests surrender all their interests," said Mr. Lindemuth. The local telephone system will therefore remain the same as it has in the past few years, till an - 7-t !- -m-. for tq tc merger In favor of the independents.
