Next Monday night the Modern Woodmen of this city will make arrangements for the largest adoption of candidates in the history of the local organization. The initiation will le held May Gth and several out of town lodges will be invited to participate in the work. May 20 Lecturer Whelan, whose duty it is to give speeches in the Intercst of the order, over the country, will come to Richmond and set forth the

ber of the Modern Woodmen. The J'cture will be given to enthuse both old and new members and at the same lime attract attention to the lodge. JTe will bo accompanied here by several state officers, including State Deputy John D. Volz. Mandy Hives and other blotches are supposed to be caused by an acid Ktomach. Repertoire at the Phillips. Adams Brothers, comedy skaters and dancers; Mle. Marreta, sensational aerial artist in a slido for life; Ethel Desmond, in high class songs; Frank Kelly in an illustrated song and motion pictures, are included in the specialties to be given at the New Phillips this week in connection with the plays put on by the Desmond stock company. A change has been made in the plan for this week in that for the first two days, Monday and Tuesday, matinee and night, the bill will be "My Uncle from Japan.-' and for the last four days of the week the offering will be "The Unwritten Law," or the "Roof Garden Tragedy," a play founded on the Thaw-White case at New- York. Special scenery and an augmented company will be provided in order to properly stage this play. It would have been presented all week, but it was not found possible to secure the scenery until Wednesday morning, so that the first presentation will be Wednesday afternoon. The usual order of performances will be followed throughout the week, otherwise and an innovation has been provided for Friday night, when
