NO AGREEMENT AS
TO BALL Manager Jessup and Henry Roberts Have Conference.CANCEL GIANTS' .GAME. Clarence Jessup's Quaker base ball team, which will endeavor to keep the baseball fans of Richmond in a beat of excitement during the summer. Is still without a home as Manager Jessup and Henry Roberts, owner of Athletic park, could come to no agreement in regard to the leasing of the park. Mr. Roberts stated that he would confer with his daughter, who is a half owner of the park, and it is thought some definite agreement can be reached between the interested parties by Saturday. Shivering from the effects of the raw, cold wind this afternoon. Jessup and four of his "Quakers" practiced at the park in order to get a little of the stiffness, accumulated during the winter months, worked off. Owing to the fact that but few of the Quakers have reported and are not expected until Monday, Manager Jessup has cancelled the game with the Giants which w'as to have been played Sunday afternoon. According to his statement the team Is in no condition and in addition to that, lacked several men. The Giants will cross bats with the Quigley and Babylon team Sunday afternoon instead. TURTLE SOUP AT COLLETT'S SATURDAY NIGHT. 2t WALLACE MAKING GOOD Richmond Boy Now With Lancaster, Pa., Team. IN THE TRI STATE LEAGUE, Harry Wallace, the well known Richmond baseball pitcher, is now playing with Lancaster, Pa., in the Tri State league and from early re ports of his efforts it seems that he is to have a most successful season. In a game against Toronto of the East ern league Wallace pitched five innings allowing but three hits. At the bat he secured two hits and a run. The Lancaster team won the game by a score of 9 to 3. In three innings which he pitched against the Philadelphia Nationals, Wallace allowed but three hits. The team is composed of ' fast players, most of those in the league having been in big league company. Among them are Deal of the Cincinnati Reds, Foster and Good of New York, Burrows of the Philadelphia Nationals and Raub with Chicago in 1903. SAME'S FINE PAID; IS OUT OF JAIL Was Charged With -Shooting Through a Window., WANTED BY BALL TEAM. After a month's jail sentence Bob Saine, colored has been released. A month ago Saine received a jail sentence of thirty days and a fine of $23 and ' costs. He was charged with shooting through the window of his home at a colored man seated in the kitchen, who Saine alleged, insulted j his wife." The jail sentence ended today but it was still up to the young colored man to serve out thirty-five days on his fine. Manager Mitchell of the Giants base ball team, on which ifine Saine last year held down third base and was I one of the star players, appeared at police headquarters with $30 to pay Saine's fine. He stated that the Giants opened the base ball season in this city Sunday of this week with tiie Quigley and Babylon team and that Saine is badly needed to play third base. Manager Mitchell was informed that Saine's fine amounted to $33. In a short time a friend of the young colored man was found with $3 to add to the fund held by Mitchell. Saine was then given his liberty. CHURCH NEEDS MINISTER Hagerstown Preacher Will Move to Muncie. Hagerstown, Ind., April 26 The local Methodist church is without a minister and there is no immediate prospect of the vacancy being filled. Rev. W. H. Pierce, who has been preaching here for three years, decided to retire from, active work, and the last conference superannuated him. according to the custom cf the Methodist church. ' The bishop found that the number of ministers who were available for immediate work was fewer than the number of ap pointments, and this necessitated i leaving Hagerstown vacant for an Indefinite time. Rev. Pierce, who has just, reurea, win make his home in Muncie, where he is well known. He owns a farm near the city of Muncie, and is interested in other valuable ! property in that vicinity. He has been a preacher in the Methodist church, northern Indiana conference, for more than forty years. He served three years in the war as a private soldier. He is one of the best-known ministers in the church. -.
