PLANS SPECIAL MEASURES.
PENNSY WILL KEEP FREIGHT EQUIPMENT ON HOME LINES.
Many Thousands of the Cars Get on To "Foreign" Roads and Are Practically Lost.
Official announcement has been
made by the Pennsylvania railroad company that that great system will use special measures to keep its freight equipment on the home lines.
To do this it will be necessary for the company to break away from the rules of the American. Railway associa
tion and other committees in which the Pennsylvania has taken an active part in the past. The officials claim
that all former efforts to keep the company's own cars on the system have proven unavailing and will take
all possible steps to rectify the existing conditions. This action indicates that the company is not satisfied with
the American clearing house commission of which it is a member and will likely abandon it in the near future.
On April 1, 1900, the Pennsylvania system owned 20o,S9 cars and on
Apu'l 1 of this year -3,T43, a gain of
Richmond division between this city and Elwood was opened Saturday at
noon and according to reports received at the local Pennsylvania offices, was working in excellent condition, although not yet perfect. It will take several days to get it in complete working order. The work on the remaining blocks on the division will be pushed from this time until completed. FOREIGN LABORERS RELEASED. According to the statements of a local official of the Pennsylvania railroad, the Pennsylvania has dispensed with the services of thousands of foreign laborers during the past few weeks, pursuing its retrenchment policy adopted some time ago. These laborers according to the local men, could be secured at a low figure and were employed generally, with work which can be postponed for some time or can be done intermittently by the regular railroad employes. It is for this reason that the Pennsylvania has released so many in the past few weeks. The adverse legislation encountered in so many states is the direct reason, however. J PENNIES IN EVIDENCE. Wheat (whole wheat) is the most:

During the year this number decreased to 54,514, a loss of 2,1 40 to the Pennsylvania making the net Joss in one year of 18,641 cars, which is 2S7 more than the additional equipment of the Pennsylvania system dur

in wheat. In connection with this it will be of greater interest to know that without doubt tho most wholesome preparation of whole wheat is Malta-Vita. It is made from the choicest entire wheat in the cleanest food factory in the world. One could live entirely upon it because it contains all that is required to make imro blood: to build up and sustain lody, brain, nerves, muscles and bone. AVheat in the form of bread, or breakfast foods that have to be cooked is hard to digest, unless it is very thoroughly chewed, on account of its high, percentage of starch. The chew
ing mixes it with saliva, converting the starch into maltose, very highly nutritious and healthful, and easy to
digest Malt extract has the same dl
gestive effect upon starch that the sa

Malta-Vita Is the most wholesome of nil prepared wheat foods because it Is
tho only flaked wheat food treated with, malt extract. This oup readers
will realize is most important as it
makes Malta-Vita practically predl Bested. Malta Vita is very highly recom
mended by physicians because it is so
very nourishing yet does not tax the ingestion, and because it is the only prepared wheat food that contains no foreign sweetening such as glucose or tyrups. All grocers, 10 cents.

A Woman Tells How to Relieve Rheumatic Fains. I hare been a very great sufferer from the dreadful disease, rheumatism for a number of years. I have tried many medicines but never got much relief from any of them until two years ago when I bought a bottle of Chamberlain's Pain Balm. I found relief before I had used all of one bottle, but kapt on applying it and soon felt like a different woman. Through my advice many of my friends have tried it and can tell you how wonderfully it has worked. Mrs. Sarah A. Cole, 140 S. New St, Dover. Del. NO INCREASE NOW. The classification committee of the trunk line railroads has decided that a general increase in freight rates at the present time would not be advisable. The scheme of increase was to raise a number of lower class freights into classes a little higher. -- MANY RAILS BOOKED. Although there have been statements made in the past that the railroads intended to retrench during the present year 250,000 tons of steel rails were booked with the United States Steel corporation when the books of that company were opened Saturday for orders. RATE MAY BE RAISED. At the meeting of the American railway association, which will be held in Chicago next Wednesday, it is probable that some of the railroads of the country will make a public declaration to other roads, that all of their cars held on competing lines, will be charged for at the rate of $1.00 per day instead of fifty and twenty-five cents, as has been the custom In the past The great car shortage on the different railroads is said to bo responsible for the decision along such
lines.
BLOCKADES ARE RELIEVED. Within the last day or two a num
ber of prominent lines have notified their connection that the blochades of
freight which have troubled, them
through the entire winter are now relieved, and they are ready to receive freight as usual. Shippers will be much gratified to learn this fact as these blockades have been very annoying to shippers and made it very uncertain when they could realize on their freight if shipped. RATES ARE RECEIVED. The local Pennsylvania ticket offices have received the rates which will be effective for the Shriners, Y. P. S. C. E., German Baptists and the National Eclectic Association conventions, which will be held at different points along the Pacific coast during the coming summer and fall. The rate of $66.05 prevails to tho majority of the cities. BLOCK SIGNALS IN USE. . The Mock signal system tu th?
passage of the two cent law. He said that never before had the local ticket office had so much use for pennies as at present, all because the passenger fares are based on the cent basis instead of nickels as heretofore. RECEIPTS SHOW DECREASE. Notwithstanding the fact that the local Pennsylvania railroad is doing the greatest local passenger business in several months, it is said that the receipts of the ticket offices are lighter than they were before the two cent law went into effect. The local passenger business was great Saturday on both the C. C. & L. and Pennsylvania railroads.
CHANGE IN NAME HAS NO GREAT SIGNIFICANCE. Although the nam of the Richmond Buggy company has been changed to that of the Seidel Buggy company for more than a year, the property of the former named company was not taken over until Saturday, at which time records of the transaction were filed in the county recorder's office. In speaking of the matter, Mr. Seidel stated that the transaction had nothing to do with the future policy of the plant and the' same officers would retain their positions while no new directors would be elected.

A N. Y. lady is emphatic about coffee, and in comparing her former condition when using it. with her later improvement under Postum Food Coffee, says: "We have used Postum instead of coffee for the past four j'ears and have been greatly benefitted by the change. "I have always had a weak stomach from childhood, and about five years ago one doctor told me I must leave
off coffee entirely. I thought I could not, but tried it for a few mornings, using cocoa in its place, but tired of it, "Then I went back to coffee and kept getting worse, until my stomach was unable to hold or digest much of anything. "One day I got hold of a little booklet, 'The Road to Wellville. I read it and decided to try Postum: "I got better as time went on and we all learned to like it so well that now. we use it to the exclusion of ev

"This summer I went away for two
weeks and my husband took his meals
at the restaurant. As he did not drink coffee, he asked for Postum. They brought it to him, 'pale, weak stuff,' made in a hurry. "But the first morning after I returned home he said, Oh, it seems to good to have a cup of Postum that's made right!' At the restaurant, he said, they did not boil it long enough, (Postum must be well boiled to get the delicious flavor see directions.) Victims of tuberculosis outnumber
the casualty list in modern warfare. Means for the limitation of the spread
of the dread disease and the best meth
ods for its cure are occupying the attention of the medical profession and
filling pages in" magazines, newspapers and periodicals. All the people are
interested for the reason that all of the people are liable to infection. Tuberculosis sanitariums, "farms," and
camps" are numerous and increasing
in number. . Any intelligent effort at the prevention of tuberculosis is cer
tain to meet with general approval.
Among the wage-earners, tuberculo
sis is prevalent,- especially with trades
men or clerks in sedentary occupa
tions. No mechanic is more liable to
this disease than is the printer. For
years taoercuiosis nas oeen common
in this trade, and the printers have al
ways been alert to ascertain and adopt
scientific methods for the warding off
and curing ' of the disease. Union
printers conduct a Home at Colorado Springs, and there is attached to this
home a tuberculosis hospital. At
present there are nearly fifty patients in this hospital. The superintendent
of the Union Printers' home, in all of
his reports, dwells upon the number of cures that result through the scientific treatment and modern methods for the treatment of .tuberculosis in use at the Union Printers' home. Hundreds of young men afflicted with the dread disease have gone to Colorado Springs, taken the course of treatment prescribed, and are now at work at the printers' trade, sound in body and fulfilling their mission cs useful citizens. A few years ago the board of trustees of the Union Printers' home decided to establish a tent colony, and this experiment has proven a great success. The Union Printers' home Is supported by the members of the International Typograhphical union, each member contributing fifteen cents a month to the fund. The International Typographical union has promoted many measures for the benefit and welfare of its membership, but none more praiseworthy or productive of more substantial results than the Union Printers'
Home and its hospital annex. The Union Printers Homo is managed by a board of trustees consisting of seven members. At present two members of the board are located on the Pacific Coast; one In Michigan; one in New York state; one In Colorado, and two James M. Lynch, the president, and J. W. Bramwood, tho secretary at the headquarters of the International Typographical Union at Indianapolis. Thsse gentlemen also are president and secretary of the International body.
