view. Control to be Preferred. "Government control should be tried under the most favorable conditions; concientiously and exhaustively. Control will fail and ownership will eventually come (to pass "Whoever is entrusted with the task of executing the laws for such control owes it to his nation to throw himself vigorously and honestly into the movement. Control is much more desirable than ownership and its ultimate result the most to be desired." After covering the rata question and expressing the opinion that rates should be based on valuation of property and not watered stock and declaring a law should be passed to prevent watering stock, Mr. Bryan declared that when control is demon
strated as ineffectual it will be necessary to go to government ownership. He declared that private ownership of railroads in the future as in the past will be the cause of constant corruption of political bodies.

Take the Unfortunate To His Farm. Cleo Camplin. the unfortunate fifteen year old Cambridge City boy, who was arrested last week on the complaint of his mother, Mrs. Maggie Camplin, stands a chance of finding the first real home the lad has ever known. . In the Friday evening issue of the Palladium there was a story of the circumstances connected with the arrest of young Camplin; his bitter denial that he had stolen $3 from his mother and of the efforts of Sheriff Meredith and Prosecutor Jessup to find a good home for him. y" nelins Ratliff, who operates a large dairy northwest of this city, read the account of the tragic story of this lad and Saturday morning Mr. Ratliff visited the jail and had a long talk with young Camplin. He asked the boy how he would like to live with him out on his farm. The boy's1 joy at the prospect of getting a happy home, knew no bounds and he told Mr. Ratliff if he would give him a chance he would show that he is a good boy and one worthy of being given a chance to make something out of himself. Ratliff Well Impressed. Mr. Ratliff was unable to make any arrangements about talcing the boy to the farm as both Sheriff Meredith and Prosecutor Jessup were absent from the city. It is probable that some
such arrangement will be made by Monday. Mr. Ratliff states that he was impressed with the boy's manner and looks, and is willing to give him "the fighting chance." Young Camplin has never had the advantage of a good home and kind treatment. He has lived the life of a street arab. The

ening that unless Henry Roberts owner of Athletic park, signified by Tuesday of this week as to whether he would be willing to sell or lease for a term of years the park to the Richmond Amusement company, the base ball plant would be located on the Gilbert field on the National road, opposite Glen Miller park and that the work of erecting the fence about the field, the grand stand and bleachers would be started next Wednesday morning and rushed to completion. The opening of the base ball season in this city takes place May 2 but the work of building the plant has been so delayed by the inability to secure some definite understanding with Mr. Roberts that it is regarded as doubtful whether it will be possible to have the stands entirely completed by that date. But this will not prevent the opening of the season on Thursday, May 2. Play at Portland May 1. The Quakers, as the fans have already named the new Richmond team will open the season at Portland, Ind., on Wednesday, May 3. The opening of the season in this city the following day will be a big event in local sporting circles and the ceremonies will be on an elaborate scale.
