Mexico City, April IS. An estimate, based on the latest figures from towns in the earthquake district, place the number of "fatalities in the recent earthquake at six hundred. Definite figures as to the injured are not given. One of the most remarkable stories of miraculous escape from death in this earthquake or perhaps any other one csme from Santa Julia. In that colony is located the Salesiano college, a school for children. The building was a new structure and sup-

OOO. The money for this purpose has
been secured by a still hunt until there was lacking just $40,000. A thirtyday canvass was started among the residents of the city and closed success
fully with $42,000 given by about 1,000 people. This Is of much larger subscription than that received in the
campaign in this city. The average subscription in the popular campaign
in Manila, being about $42 and in Rich

pledges, the average per person is
about $20, a difference in favor of the

hundred or one hundred and fifty
young men will assist in this canvass,
and will give every available night to this work up until midnight of the

the reports will be received from the committee every niht as they get through their V,rK ana te made known to the piolic next day. This
house to house canvass is made necej-
sary by the fact that there are a great many people who will give cash subscriptions as well as pledges to the movement, who have not been seen or spoken to about the matter up to the present time. By this method every man, woman and child will have an opportunity to help in this work.
At the meeting of the South Side Improvement association, at its hall on the evening of Tuesday, April Hi, the following preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted: Whereas. Death has removed from among us our beloved friend and fel-
therefore in view of the loss we have sustained, and the still greater loss occasioned to his respected relatives, be it Resolved, That the members of this association hereby desire to express their sense of bereavement and grief at the loss of one of their earliest and most faithful members, and to record the enjoyment and profit which they have long bad in the genial and social qualities of the deceased. Resolved. That we sincerely sympathize with the relatives and near
and that we respectfully commend them for consolation to Divine Providence, who. though sometimes inscrutable in His dispensations, yet doeth all things well, feeling sure that to them, as to us. there Is comfort in the knowledge that the deceased was honorable, manly and one of the most respected citizens of this community. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be properly engrossed and sent to the family of our deceased fellow member, as a testimony of our grief and sympathy. ADOLF W. BLCKWEDEL, Pres. MATTHEW J. OPENING OF THE TERRITORY ON THE NORTH WOULD BE HIGHLY ACCEPTABLE TO THIS CITY AND COUNTY. It is said that the plans which have been under way, have been accepted
by the company for the. extension of the Ft. Wayne and Springfield traction line, which is now operating be tween Ft Wayne and Decatur, to th!s city via Portland, Winchester, Berne, Fountain City and Ridgeville. Engineers are at work preparing specifications for the extension and it Is expected an announcement will be made in a few days. According to the statement of a Ft. Wayne man who ?s interested in the company and who was in the city Wednesdaj, the extension will practically parallel the Grand Rapids and Indiana railway an I will touch some very rich territory. Offers New Service. At Portland the new extension would connect with the Muncie and Portland line which would offer facilities for inaugurating through service between Ft. Wayne and Indianapolis, as well as give Richmond a northern interurban line which would mean much to the city. The northern interurban projects have been looked forward to with much interest in this city but none so far has materialized.
