Hagerstown, Ind., April 12. Some interesting experiments In 'utilizing v-oal ashes for fuel, have been carried on here during the past few weeks. The result astonishes all who have witnessed the experiments. Not less than 25 per cent of the coal can be Raved and practically all of the ashes consumed. This is accomplished in the ordinary furnace and stove used in heating residences and both hard and soft coal were used in the experiments. Were this method not. so simple and absolutely without expense it might be called a new discovery, possessing tremendous possibilities.
It is incredible that it has not besn a matter of general knowledge since the discovery of coal for fuel, for it hi as sensible as kindling a fire and as easily practiced as wasting the ashes. Tried at Hindman House. The discovery was first tried here at the Hindman house, where anthracite coal is used in the furnace. It was the rule to carry out three or four scuttles full of ashes every morning when the furnace was shaken down. The pile of ashes which accumulated up to the first of February, when the new method of burning fuel was adopted, was as large as a hay stack. A traveling man from Indianapolis observed the pile of ashes and informed the landlord of the hotel that such waste was wicked. He told how himself and his neighbors had settled the question of disposing of the ashes from their furnaces and incidentally
saving a large per cent of fuel. The
method he described was to take a large box and throw two or three bushels of ashes into it. The ashes were thoroughly wet down and shaken together so that no dry ashes remained in the same. Then coal to about twice the amount of ashes was
thrown upon the heap and the entire
mass mixed together. This is the proportion of one-third ashes to twothirds coal. The fuel is then ready for ise. It can be used only on a fire already started to burning, as the mixture resembles somewhat a stiff mortar and is very wet. Usually it should be thrown only upon a hot fire. The combustion that follows is complete and practically all of the ashes and cinders, together with all clinkers are consumed. The resulting heat is greater than that made by coal alone and it lasts longer. Many Have Tried It. At the Hindman house anthracite coal only is used In the furnace. . No one here has yet tried the experiment in base burners using anthracite, but it is claimed it will work perfectly and result fully as satisfactory as in the furnaces. Many persons have tried the experiment with soft coal, both in furnaces and ordinary heating and cooking stoves. Another great advantage is that very little smoke issues from the chimney. Instead, a soft, whitish vapor arises from the chimney which causes no unpleasantness in the neighborhood.

Dr. Williams' Pink Pills are a doctor's prescription, use! by an eminent practitioner, and for nearly a generation known as a reliable household remedy throughout the United States. For a loug time I was subject to bad spells of faintnesa and lack of breath accompanied by au indescribable feeling that . seemed to start in my stomach. Whenever I was a little run-down or over-tired, these spells would come on. They occurred frequently but did not last very long. "I was confined to my bed for ten week9 one time and the doctor pronounced my trouble chronic inflammation of the stomach and bowels. Since that time I have been subject to tLe fainting spells and at other times to fluttering of the heart and a feeling as though I was smothering. My general health was very bad and I was weak and trembling. "I had seen Dr. Williams' Pink Pills mentioned in the newspapers and decided to try them. STRANGER USES HIS KNIFE WITH EFFECT
Joseph Workes Assaulted by An Unknown Man on Fort Wayne Avenue.
HAD ASKED FOR A LOAN.
WHEN WORKES REFUSED IT, THE STRANGER DREW A KNIFE AND SLASHED FOR A VITAL PART.
An unknown man, who was intoxicated, made a murderous assault with a knife on Joseph Workes, 1027 Sheridan street," Wednesday ' afternoon while Mr. Workes was standing on Ft. Wayne avenue, near the Fetta cigar store. Mr. Workes escaped with nothing worse than a rip through his clothing and a thorough fright. After the man had made the deadly assault he took to his heels and his identity is still a mystery. Mr. Workes is employed by Gaar, Scott & Co., and Wednesday afternoon after his day's work, he walked into a store on Ft. Wayne avenue and after transacting some business stepped out to the sidewalk. As he did so some stranger, evidently in an intoxicated condition, approached him and requested the loan of a dollar.Asked for a Loan. Mr. Workes glanced at the man and failing to recognize him, promptly refused to make the loan. The stranger then pulled a large knife and with a quick movement slashed at Mr. Workes. The blow was directed at Mr. Workes stomach and the keen blade ripped through his coat, vest, trousers band, shirt and underclothing but the skin was not even scratched. It is stated that the rip made through Mr. Workes clothing was nearly a foot in length. Workes Was Dazed, Mr. Workes was naturally dazed by the unexpectedness of the assault and by the time that he had recovered his composure, the assailant had taken to his legs and was rapidly disappearing down the street. Mr. Workes made no effort to pursue him. He describes the man as roughly dressed and says
that he had never seen him before. Few if any persons were witnesses tc
the assault. Mr. -Workes is being congratulated by his friends on his narrow escape.

GROWTH OF TRACTION LINES ISJWIIOMEHAL pearly 1,700 Miles of Road in Indiana Now.
IS EVEN GREATER IN OHIO.
The growth of the interurban business in Indiana, which began with the peration of a car between Marion and Summitville, a line which gave the ,ery word "inter-urban" to the language, is sketched by C. N. Wilson, vriting in "The Tradesman." He ;ays: "On the 12th day of January, ten ,cars ago, the first electric car was :un in Indiana, and in the same nonth and year the first electric car as started in operation in Ohio; since Jiat time 1,050 miles of modern electric roads have been constructed and put in operation in Indiana, and.'-V 210 miles in Ohio. , In addition to this, there is now building in the two states, 2,20 miles of new road, and an equal mileage is being promoted. '.As soon as the gap of thirty miles is built between Crawfordsville and Danville. 111., and another small gap between Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Bryan, O., It will be possible to take a sleeping car at St. Louis and by continuous electric roads, travel to Indianapolis, Louisville, Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo, Detroit, Cleveland, Erie, Pa., and Buffalo, N. Y., and at no distant day to Pittsburg. All this will probably be a reality within another year as all lines except the gaps mentioned are in operation.
