The total amount of Y. M. C. A. fund subscribed, includes Mr. Reid's $13,000

offer and the Henley pledges. There

still remains $22,243 to be raised be

fore Mr. Reid's offer can be secured.

Each day makes the situation grow

more critical, and the citizens of Rich

mond have a duty to perform if the Y

M. C. A. is realized in Richmond. There are many men of means who have as

yet given nothing to this worthy cause, and these at least should put their

shoulders to the wheel and boost. Rich mond's reputation in this regard de

pends upon what the richer men do to

ward the cause. The ignominy which

would fall to this city should the pres

ent campaign fail, would be greater

than the ordinary citizen realizes, as the campaign has been waged in this city for such a length of time, that the eyes of the entire state are on Richmond, and particularly is this true of

the towns -who now have Y. M. C. A. buildings, erected through the generosity of their more wealthy men. The

men of less means iu this city have giv

en and given well. Many of those more able to give have done nothing,

and with them largely rests the out

tome of the effort. Several of these, it is said, are waiting until the last minute and will then make up the defi-

ciency completing the $100,000 lor

which the committees are working.

, Captains in a Contest.

The captains of the various campaign

squads are working faithfully and a

few of them are devoting almost their

entire attention to the work, regard

less of the results which may fall to them in the business world. One cap

tain has set the goal of $3,000 for his squad and is well on the road to suc

cess, while the other captains say they

are going to hustle him for the first place, before the last days of the cam

paign arrives. The interest in the

campaign has now'reached a point nev

er attained before, and the eyes of the entire Richmond public are on the work of the committees pushing the

work.

The amounts which the various squads of the young men's committee

have reported, follow: George Bartel $3,063. Howard Dill $2,710. L. C. Peacock .?l.:.!t3. W.-S. Hiser $1.30S. W. O. Wissler-$1.24J. Isaac Wilson $1,111. L. S. Gay $7JS. Turner Hadley $055. Arthur Ellis $535. O. P. Nusbaum $520. Total $13,350. 1

Vlie Cpper Cent. The earliest -ents issued by this government, near the end of the eighteenth century, were of pure copper big "cartwheels" weighing 264 grains apiece. It was soon ascertained that their worth as crude metal was actually greater than their coined value, and so It was deemed necessary to reduce their weight. In 1703 this was done

and the weight of the coin brought down to 208 grains, and three years later the weight was again reduced to 168 grains. The present current cent weigh only forty-eight grains. Los Angeles 'J'!tv:5.

Early Marriage Results. Divorces are, happily, rare in society circles. Separation by mutual consent, however, grows more frequent every year. Every one has upon his or her visiting list husbands and wives who never meet if they can help it, but between whom there has never been an open breach. Incompatibility of temper is the usual cause, and the reason for that Is, one imagines, the still common custom of encouraging the young-

J ! er generation to marry before they I have begun to approach years of dis

cretion. London inrone.

Lion Taming. Men tvho.have had long experience

There never has been, and there never will be. say some, an appeal made to the lion's Intelligence, because the limited amount of that quality which he possesses Is dominated by his ferocity.

Tree Snakes of Borneo. The flying frogs of the Malays appear to be mythical, but the tree snakes of Borneo are credited with taking flying leaps from the boughs of trees to the ground. It is found that scales on the lower part of the body may be drawn inward so that the whole lower surface becomes concave. The resistance to the air is thus. greatly increased, and experiments Indicate that , the snakes do not fall 1 in . writhing coils, but are let down gently in a direct line by the parachutelike action of their peculiar bodies. A Pugnacious Sard. An earthquake which occurred in England on Feb. S. 1750, frightened to death Aaron Hill, the poet and visionary projector. Of Hill's voluminous writings only an epigram or two are now remembered, but he was a. pug nacious bard, who so' terrified Pope

that the spiteful little satirist, would only walk abroad with loaded pistols and accompanied by his big Danish dog Bounce. Aaron Hill is one of the many literary worthies connected with the city of Westminster.
