VISITING PHYSICIANS ADDRESSJHE SOCIETY Interesting Session of the Medical Body. DR. DAVIS ALSO SPOKE. The Wayne County Medical society met in regular session at its rooms iu the court house Wednesday afternoon, and listened to three of the best talks that have been given before the body for a long time. The society was honored by the presence of Dr. W. N. Wishard and Dr. Theo. Potter, professors in the Indiana Medical college at Indianapolis. Dr. Wishard spoke on "Operative Relief of the Prostive Obstruction," and his talk was very interesting. Dr. Potter spoke on "The Early Diagnosis of Tuberculosis," and he, too, gained great favor among the Wayne county physicians, by hi3 treatment of the subject. . Dr. T. Henry Davis of this city, spoke on typhoid fever and his address was no less interesting than hat of the vi3iting doctors. Tha Gi-ss Cyo drop. T?ie glas eve crop coses from Thnrlagia. Four men sit at a table, each vitb a gas jet before him, and the eyes are blown froui plates and molded into shape by hand. The colors are traced in with small needles, and, as no set rule is observed in the coloring, no two eyes are exactly alike. Sometimes a one eyed man or woman come, maybe, from a great distance sits before one of these Tburingian tables, posing for a glass orb. and the artisan, with his gas jet, his glass and his needle, looks up at the sitter and then down at his work, and altogether the scene suggests a portrait painter at work in his studio. FUTURE OF CONCERTS

SOMEWHATJiNCERTAIN Trouble Is Break Between City And Traction Company. THE BAND DID NOT ELECT. Owing to the fact that the local street car company controlled by the Terre Haute, Indianapolis and Eastern syndicate, and the city council and board of works are at loggerheads, there remains some doubt whether they will jointly secure the Richmond City band for a series of concerts during the summer months, as was proposed before the present freight squabble came up. It was the idea then to secure the services of the band, for two concerts weekly, one to be given Thursday nights in the smaller parks of the city, and one Sunday afternoon in the Glen, the city and street car company standing an equal portion of the expense. The question probably will remain unsolved for some time to come. The annual election of officers for the band did not take place Wednesday night as announced, but will occur next Monday night, at which time it is hoped to have a larger crowd than was present last night. One of the features of the band's music this summer will be the playing of the operatic scores sung at the Gennett theater during the past winter by different theatrical companies. According to the manager, Lawrence Deuker, operatic scores are more greatly appreciated by the Richmond public, than the classical pieces of music, and this largely influenced the band to take the step it did in regard to the matter. Untold depths oi' snobbishness among freeborn Americans teem to be revealed by a recent incident that is worthy of a place in literature. A wealthy and cultured famliy of good ancestry, but who did not happen to figure as social leaders in a certain city, received invitations for a wedding among people whom they knew very well, but whose soclul aspirations were rather more pronounced than their own. The gift selected for the bride was a beautiful clock. It was bought at one of the best shops, and the cards of the givers were left to be sent with the clock at a certain date. Time passed, the wedding came off, but no acknowledgment reached the people who sent the clock. The clerk remembered shipping it with the cards, but nothing further was known until a mutual friend of the two families was moved to maka inquiries of the bride's mother. This lady s?emed to be a little vague about it, but it eventually transpired that the ambitious young bride had removed the cards of the donors and had substituted that of a conspicuous society leader with whom she happened to have the" "merest calling acquaintance. Harper's Bazar. Tracing a Voice. It was when scholarly heads were bent low over weighty books and when students were flitting to and from classes on all side? of the corridor of the Drexel institute that the silence was broken one day by shrill shouts of Tlease let me out! riease let me out! Oh, but it's a nice day! I don't like it in here!"' The startled porter rushed to the museum and back again to his posL The librarians, entirely unprepared for such an outrageous breach of the rule of silence which hangs aloft, likewise took a survey to see what man, woman or child for the voice was puzzling in its quality could be making such weird noises. Xo one could be discovered. Then the cries issued forth again, and another search began, and finally a young boy from the engineering department pointed out a blushing old lady who, beneath her skirts, sheltered an enormous parrot cage. She explained that she was moving the bird, had stopped in to get a book and was only mollified when she was told by the librarian that she could come back again without the lawbreaking bird. Philadelphia Record. The Longfellow Town Portland, Me. Few great, men have loved their youth and all that pertains to that happy period as did Longfellow. As he returned again and again -to the city of his birth., striving among the familiar scenes of boyhood to find and to re-live his '"Lost Youth," so the literary pilgrim, as to a shrine, visits and revisits Portland, Me., "the beautiful town that is seated by the sea," to seek scenes rich in .heir association with a poet and a home eloquent of the personality of a world famous man. This is the spot where Longfellow the boy passed that golden youth of which he sings so sweetly, the scene of that beautiful home life which In his verse has found the universal heart, the one place of all others which he loved, and to which it was his custom to return at least once each year throughout his life. Stephen Cammett in Putnam's. The Mystery of the Universe. I compare the mind of man to a musical instrument with a certain range of notes, beyond which in both directions exists infinite silence. The phenomena of matter and force come within our intellectual range, but behind and above and around us the real mystery of the universe lies unsolved and, as far as we are concerned. SOUTH BEND FILLED WITH PEDAGOGUES The Attendance of Teachers It Is Thought Will Reach At Least 3,750.

THE OPENING TONIGHT. WINONA LAKE WILL PROBABLY BE SELECTED AS .THE NEXT MEETING PLACE McCRACKEN FOR PRESIDENT. South Bend, Ind.. April A. The first session of the Northern Indiana Teach ers association convention will be held ! j this evening and the city s filled with; teachers from all parts of the state. 1 The prediction is now made that of the 10,00 teachers who hold membership in the association at least 3,750 will be present. The program arranged this year is of much higher class than any of the programs of preceding conventions. This is due to the fact that the greatly increased membership had placed much more money in the treasury. The opening meeting which will be held in the Auditorium, will probably pe the one of the most interest to the public and as a great rush is expected the Auditorium Annex will be thrown open to accommodate the overflow. At this session the lecture will be delivered by Dr. George Edgar Vincent of the University of Chicago. His s'.bject will be "Children vs. Grownups." Aside from this interesting feature will be the inaugural address of President W. P. Modi in of Hartford City. The retiring president, O. P. Kinsie, of Valparaiso, will also make an address. Winona Lake will probably secure the next convention of the association. This fact developed this afternoon when many of the delegates announced their intention of canvassing the incoming teachers for the purpose of casting their votes for the Presbyterian Assembly grounds. There are several other cities that would like to secure the convention, Elkhart, Michigan City, Marion and Muncie, being among them. No work has been accomplished in picking a slate of officials, and the prospects are that it will not be until near the end of the convention that a line can be obtained on the new officials. In South Bend, however, there has developed a sentiment favoring S. B. McCracken of Elkhart for the presidency. AN I US DANGER.
