The prospects of a long tramp of six hundred miles, with all the discomforts which go with that kind of a trip, does not seem to frighten three Richmond boys, who wish to go to the Jamestown exposition. The diring adventurers referred to are Richard Holzapfel, Elmer Thomas and Kenneth Karns. The boys will leave Richmond Monday morning for Cincinnati by train. From Cincinnati they will strike the pike for the exposition where thev hone to obtain em-

McDowell bill in the last general assembly. Official notice of the passage of the bill has been received in Richmond, accompanied by a copy of the bill itself.
Under the old law, known as the!
"warehouse law." loeal managers took all chances in the world, as they coind be held liable for any loss which occurred in their houses as long as those suffering the loss were guests. Persons who were afflicted with crookedness, could register at the hotel, and then after a few hours, state that they had lost a valuable overcoat, umbrella or perhaps jewels by theft, and the owner would be liable for the entire!
amount. Losses of this nature have been often sustained by local hotels.
but there has been none of large Importance.
Cases of Deception. According to the statement of a local "mine host," there have been cases in
Indiana where actresses and others would register at a hotel, leave a package of what was termed valuable jewelry and diamonds in the safe, . and when calling for them the next morning, say that substitutions had been made, for their really valuable gems. In all cases the hotels have had to stand this loss. The copy of the new laws shows that the highest loss a proprietor can suffer is $200 under any
circumstances. No hotel manager will be obliged to receive property over $50O in value for keeping in the safe.
According to the new law, cards have
to be placed in conspicuous places about the hotel and if the guest does not place his valuables with the hotel clerks,' as the cards give notice, the guest will have to suffer the entire loss, no matter how much. ,
- Joke in the Bill. The joke of the entire bill, accord
ing to local managers, is the last clause which states that all proceeds from the sale of valuables left at the hotel for
a period or more than three niontns. over and above the amount necessary to reimburse the hotel proprietor for his services, shall go to. the .school fund. Trunks and valuables left, oft
en times, in lieu of board bills, will not begin to pay the bills and if the teachers depend upon this excess revenue
for an increase in their salaries, theyi
will fare badly. The bill pleases local hotel managers
and they say they now have protec-j
tion auch as they never had before. A j guest practically had the owners at a j disadvantage heretofore, and in case j there was any dishonesty on the part I of the guests, hotel managers have had j
to "dig" forthwith.
