London, March 8. The "woman's

enfranchisement bill," which came up

for its second reading in the house ' commons today, and which was Li dueed by Mr. Dickinson, liberal, fc. though practically identical with the

measure Introduced by James Keir Hardie, socialist, last year, ha3 evok

ed far greater general interest. The Vill simply provides that women shall have the franchise on the same terms on which it Is now granted to men. The militant tactics of the suffragists recent months and their bold raids on the house of commons itself, from which on several occasions, they lit

erally have been thrown out bodily, and scores of them imprisoned, have given the question a prominence Vhich it hitherto had not attained. The measure was defeated for the present session. The house of commons was crowded when the debate on the proposed measure began, but only women whose good behavior . was guaranteed by members of parliament were permitted to enter the gallery. All those who were connected with the re-

worship at j cent disorders within the precincts of

the houses of parliament were specifically excluded and in view of possible disorderly demonstrations on the part of so-called "suffragettes," in connection with the bill, extraordinaryprecautions were taken by the police to bar the approaches to the house of commons. Police Force Doubled. The forces inside and outside the building .were doubled and a special detachment of the police was held in reserve in the neighborhood, in spite

of the fact that the militant women had announced that they would quiet

ly await the vote in the house, after which they would meet and decide on their future action. Killed for1 Present Session. The debate was a repetition of the familiar arguments for and against female suffrage, and there was a complete divergence from the usual party lines, the rejection of the bill being moved by Mr. White, liberal, another opponent being Mr. Cremer, also a lib-

New York, March 7. As a direct result of the recent interstate commerce commission investigation of the

lion Pacific, it is reported in Wall eet this afternoon from what are legarded as iositively authoritive quarters that action will be brought at once upon recommendation of the commission to compel the Union Pacific to dispose of its Southern Pacific stock and divorce the two corporations entirely. It is said the Harriman interests have been tipped off as to the intentions of the commission and are preparing to make one of the most desperate fights since the Great Northern . legal battle to prevent the execution of interstate commission recommendations. A long and bitter legal battle is regarded as a foregone conclusion though nothing definite has teen learned along this line, it is regarded as more than probable that the interstate commerce commission will make additional recommendations later that the government compel the Union Pacific to dispose of all its investment holdings in other lines which can in

the slightest degree be construed as competing line.

Sensational Pacer Broke Her Leg in Paddock on the Farm of Her Owner at Milton.

It was not generally known until this week that the sensational pacing filly, Princess Manlove, broke her leg last December while running in her

Manlove and he was not informed until very recently, as it was feared that "the news would retard his recovery. Hannewalt's strike is a well developed vein running $25,000 per ton. If the discovery pans out it will probably be the richest strike in history. Forty sacks of ore, netting $1,000 is being
