Provisions Live Stock, Grain and Stock Markets
RICHMOND MARKETS contrary to expectations, ana tne predictions of local stock dealers, hogs yesterday took a jump to seven cents. It was thought that hogs would even go below the $6.73 figure quoted Fx1ilay if there was any change in the markets at all. The receipts of hogs and cattle for the month of February has been good at all the local butchering establishments. Th grain market is at a standstill and the grain dealers are receiving a plentiful supply of all cereals, henco the steady quotations. Wheat brings seventy-five cents at the present time and the grain is expected to stay at that figure up until the threshing seabon comes again. It will probably lower at that time providing the wheat crop pans out as expected. THE LOCAL MARKETS. The prices quoted below are those paid by J. M. Eggemeyer. An unexpected feature of the market was an advance of 'ic at Liverpool, wjich was based upon statements from Russia to the effect that the famine situation there had been underestimated. The corn market was active and strong in sympathy with wheat. The oats market was strong and trade was fairly active. The provision market was quiet and prices firm. (By O. G. NEW YORK MARKETS New York, Feb.. 23. Henry Clews, banker, reviewing the financial situation, says: The outlook for the market continues mixed. We have had considerable liquidation and the situation has been to a limited extent relieved thereby, but the money outlook continues unsatisfactory. In side selling occurs on every rally and confidence has been materially weakened. In all probability the mar-1 ket will ultimately reach a lower lev-' el, accompanied by frequent upward reactions when depressing influences j nave been discounted. An uncertainty of some importance is the policy of the new secretary of the treasury. We have bad another week of irregularity and weakness. Liquidation was renewed on a quiet and persistent scale, which encouraged depression and more or less disturbed general element of weakness is the continued issue of short terms railroad notes on an unprecedented scale. In the majority of cases these are classed as desirable investments, and especially attractive on account of the high rates of Interest. But the issue ; of these notes in such amazing sums emphasizes unusual financial conditions. Our bond market is already gutted and weak. Fortunately, Europe, especially .London and Paris, has taken liberal amounts of these new securities, thus averting dangerous strain upon the local monej- market at a critical period and also materially strengthening the probability of gold imports. It is estimated that from January 1 to September 1, 1906, a total of 9,895 tons of toys were sent from Germany to the United States, as against 8.716 tons for the same period the previous year.
