Farmers who have been in the habit of "doctoring" the toothsome maple sirup with brown sugar and other ingredients will find themselves in serious trouble this year, if they do so and then label the sirup as pure. A well known farmer near this city wrote to Dr. J. X. Ilurty, of the state board of health, concerning this matter and received a reply which is in substance as follows: "It is against the Indiana law to label maple sirup as pure unless it is pure. If it contains any artificial coloring matter, as burned sugar, or if it
contains any brown sugar, or white sugar, or molasses or glucose, then it is not maple sirup and must not be labeled maple sirup. The word 'pure'
must not be traduced. It must be
kept aloof from all bad associations. If the farmers put cane sugar in their maple sirup or if they add glucose, the fact must be plainly stated upon the label and the word 'pure and the word 'maple' must be avoided. In other words, the law requh-es that everything shall be labeled exactly what it is and no deception practiced." This letter is worrying dealers in the toothsome sirup, who had been in the habit of mixing in "just a little brown sugar to make the sirup good," and then selling it as the pure stuff. All of them will now be required to label the cans and state how they have been "doctored," or else sell the pure stuff.

JAPS AGAINST EXCLUSION
President Roosevelt's Proposed Amendment to Exclusion Measure is By No Means Satisfactory to Little Yellow Men.
Publishers' Press.J Tokyo, . vu. hen the official text of President Roosevelt's proposed amendment of the exclusion bill was published it created the strongest dissatisfaction among interested parties, although the movements of government have not yet assumed a definite shape. Japanese residents of the Hawaiian islands telegraphed President Roosevelt and the Hawaiian representatives in the house Indicating the seriousness of the injury which will be caused to their rights and interests by this legislation. Leaders of the opposition here are aware, however, that under the circumstances the only alternative 13 to calmly resign to the situation, hoping the government can arrange with United States authorities to reduce the sacrifice in the interest of Japanese emigrants to a minimum. They regret the new law lest the San Francisco people, glorifying in their success, should assume an overbearing attitude. News of this kind would only tend to injure Japanese susceptibility which President Roosevelt has been specially careful to avoid.

CRUSADE ON AT FOWLER
People of the Town Think That the Passing of the "Blind Tiger" Bill is the Beginning of Better Things.
Publishers' Press.J Pittsburg, Pa., Feb. 19. Under the laws of Pennsylvania and according to
numerous court decisions in this and a number of other states as interpreted by well known and able attorneys, the testimony of Dr. Britton D. Evans, the expert alienist at the Thaw trial, that Harry K. Thaw, was insane on his wedding day, amounts to a practical annullment of the marriage of Harry Thaw and Mrs. Evelyn Thaw. Some court decisions in this state holds that even the actual drawing of a nullifying decree is unnecessary. The Rev. L. McEwen, pastor of the Third Presbyterian church, who performed the marriage ceremony says that to all outward appearances, Harry K. Thaw was sane when he was married. Marriage license clerk Harman 1m Hagner, recalls Thaw's peculiar ac
tions and says that as he thinks it over, it appears to him that Thaw was not himself when he applied for and secured the license. The old common law, which is used in all the text books and which has generally been upheld by the courts is that where a marriage is entered into and either party to such contract is insane at the time the contract is not only voidable but absolutely void and of no effect.

Atlanta, Georgia, Man is Fined $1,000 for Conducting Polite Gambling Joint.
iPublishers" Press.3 Fowler, Ind., Feb., 19. Eight persons were arrested here today on the charge of gambling. This is believed to be a windup of a long campaign against all methods of gambling in this city. Among those against
whom warrants were issued were j "Tax" Stroebel and Tom Martin, who i as alleged, most of the time have j
been running games of their own. Since the "blind tiger" bill has been made a law, the citizens now feel that the city is forever free of saloons and better moral conditions are expected as a result. It is believed that the gamblers now under arrest will pay their fines and quit the business for good.

Klopp does not want to resort to such a course he says that if necessary he will arrest dog owners, whose canines are found in the park.
