Only a short distance out in the

Atlantic ocean from Cape Charles and Cape Henry that guard the entrance

to Hampton Roads and Chesapeake Bay, schools or whales may be seen by passengers on almost any Atlantic liner or other ship that passes. They are of the Atlantic or Biscay, or right

whale species, and often venture so

close to a vessel that they could easily be harpooned. They grow to an

fully sixty feet long. Once upon a time there was a man who said, "There is nothing new under the sun," but that was a long time ago, and the old gentleman had no idea of the modern genius," and many new things which have appeared since then or have appeared for the

der of Mrs. Rosa Mangrum, was found

guilty of murder in the first degree.

The verdict carries with it the death

penalty.

Mrs. Mangrum was under the care

cf Dr. Feist, disappeared Dec. 18, 1905, and her body was found in the Ohio river at Cairo, 111., Jan. 23, 1906.

A few days before the disappear

ance of Mrs. Mangrum she drew something like $1,400 from a local bank and announced that she was going

to Chicago. The evidence against Dr.

Feist was purely circumstantial, the

most salient feature being that he de

posited in a local bank the sum of

$500 a few days after the disappear

ance of Mrs. Mangrum.
