"DREADNOUGHT" 10 BE AT JAMESTOWN Laryest Man of War in the World to Take Part in Grand Naval Display.

IS A WONDERFUL VESSEL HA8 GREATER SPEED THAN ANY OTHER VESSEL AFLOAT ND HAS THREE TIMES THE GUN STRENGTH. Publishers' Press.l Norfolk, Va., Jan. 26. The monster battleship "Dreadnought," the largest Man-ofWar in the world, Great Britain's latest acquisition, will participate In the grand naval display in Hamp ton Roads, during the period of the Jamestown Ter-Centennial exposition. The famous sea fighter, is now on her way to the West Indies, where she will be seen by Admiral . Evan's fleet", which is carrying on winter manoeu vres in those waters. It is the opinion of the British Consul here that the Dreeadnought will remain in the southern waters of the West Indies, until the winter i3 over, arriving, in Hampton Roads, in time for the opening of the Jamestown exposition on April 26th,-remaining there until the British fleet, detailed for participation at the exposition, is ready to return home. The Dreadnought was only a short time ago put into commission after having been a remarkably short period In building. She is of 18,000 tons displacement and has an armament of ten twelve-inch guns, or nearly three times the gun strength of any other battleship afloat. This vessel has a speed of more than twenty knots an hour and could therefore overtake any combination she can fight, or run away, from any she can lot. Besides this visit of tae Dreadnosht England, through the Admiralty's lata derision, will send her f rst cruiser divfpion, to Hampton Roads for the opn ing celebradon of the Jamestown potition. . The vessels comprising this division are the Good Hope, Antrim, Devonshire, Hampshire and Poxburgh. These ships, will probably give England a stronger representation in the naval manoeuvres in Hampton Roads, than any of the other foreign powers that are to participate. Some persons associate particular colors with particular sounds A Washington scientist, in touching upon this phenomenon recently stated that there are two forms of it. In one case . the person has a sensation as if a transparent colored film, like a rainbow, appeared before his eyes when certain vowels, or musical sounds strike the ears, in" the other case letters or written words, representing the sounds heard, appear in colored tints. Increased rpubiisher preaai New York, Jan. - 26. Estimates of the value of the space that skyscrapers have added to the working area of big cities like New York and Chicago reach a fabulous total. In Manhattan alone more than 200 acres of - floor space have been added to the financial district bounded by Park Row, William street and Broadway since the steel frame came into use. This total is being still further increased f by the erection of 19 new skyscrapers, costing S4U,uuu,uuu, wmcn win sup - ply 3,000,000 more square feet, or 70 acres. The largest of these skyscrapers, the biggest office building In the world, will add 12 acres. Values in the financial section of the city have increased to such an extent that recently a Broadway plot sold for $600 a 'square foot a rate equal to $26,000,000, an acre.- The ' ground space of the business district is a uxed quantity it can roi oe extended; but the actual working space is limited only by the height to which steel buildings can' rise. This height has steadily grown greater, until now a building 41 stories high is in course of construction. by Millions. I .The ground area upon which the 19 j skyscrapers now going up will stand Is only a little more than three acres, , Yet 100,000 persons will be housed on ; these three acres every day without . crowding. . . .. . . . ... A most Important economic factor is the wonderful speed made possible by the use of steel and hollow-tile in skyscraper construction, effecting an estimated saving of time of from six to twelve months. This means a saving of $300,000 in rentals on two average ; Duuaings. nouow ones, nave revoiutionized the methods of modern build ings. - Those who think that skyscraper building is being overdone may be surprised to know that long before a new one is finished a large part of its space Is rented. The safety of the fireproof skyscraper is no longer questioned. Architects and - builders are agreed that the steel-framed structure is the safest and most enduring type. This is due mainly to the fact that the terra cotta fire proofing used to pro tect the steel has made even the tall est and heaviest building practically immune from corrosion as well as from the danger of conflagration. The chief reason for the general desire not to serve is probably found in the order of Justice Fitzger ald, practically locking up the Jury men from the time they are drawn un til the trial is over. This is an unusual proceeding and as most of the talesmen are active business men, it involves possible financial loss besides the hardship. It is regarded as certainthat the $1,000 license bill will emerge considerably mutilated if it is passed at all. The house also is ex pected to Juggle the Ganiard "blind tiger" bill this week. The senate seems to be the reform body. Nearly every measure which proposes a change, supposedly for the better, has been rushed through the senate, but grave doubts as to the house are felt by the advocates of these reform measures. - ' And speaking of the house one need not talk to many of its members before ascertaining that there are many beautiful clubs awaiting some of Governor Hanly's pet measures. There is a veritable anvil chorus of Hanly knockers in the lower branch of the general assembly and this in spite of the fact that the house bowed very low when Hanly said he wanted Branch for speaker. Branch was the man se lected, but many of the republicans who assisted in putting the Martinsville man in the exalted place, are waiting for a chance to get even with the governor for his aggressiveness in that contest. Senator Kirkman, Representative Ratllff and Representative Elliott, all holding down the Wayne county end in the general assembly, are Included In the joint caucus compact which has for its main object the pushing through of some of the reform measures which the republicans promised in their platform. It developed today that the democrats have also cau cused and a majority decided that all republican measures which would "look good" to the people of the state in general, should be tagged . for slaughter. The Democratic leaders feel, it is said, that It is the duty of the party, to oppose everything ema nating from the republican side which may be use das campaign thunder two years hence.
