sons were forced to walk to work by

The blockade was the indireot cause of fatal injuries sustained by Miss Lillian Dahlke, 19. In company with many other people, Miss Dahlke was standing on the platform at Canal street and when the first train stopped she was pushed from the platform In the rush to board the cars. She fell between the train and the platform in such a way that It was found necessary to chop a portion of the platform to extricate her.

Well Known Colored Character Did Not Escape Punishment However, Drawing $5 and Thirty Days in Jail Charged With Theft.
Eli Copeland's knowledge of legal lore is not extensive, but nevertheless he acted as his own attorney in the city court, and led several witnesses whose testimony showed beyond all question that he had purloined a small quantity of brass from the Pennsylvania railroad company, a merry gait. His strenuous efforts, however, to convince the court that he had not fractured one of the statutes of this great commonwealth were fruitless, and he drew $5 and thirty days.
EXAMINATION TIME HERE
Already the Students in the Commercial Department at High School are Taking Quizes.
Examinations will soon be held at high school for the end of the first term is drawing near. Examinations in commercial English, commercial law and shorthand are already being held as the work in these three studies of the commercial department is very heavy and numerous reviews are necessary. The students in all commercial work at high school are thoroughly taught and are doing very fine work especially in bookkeeping, shorthand and typewriting. A number of post graduates who have been doing extra work in the high school commercial department, will finish in February and they are certainly competent to fill the position for which they have been preparing.
FINANCE COMMITTEE VOTES FAV
ORABLY UPON NOMINATIONS FOR SECRETARY OF INTERIOR ..AND TREASURY. Publishers Press. Washington, Jan. 15. By a rote of eight to seven the senate ship subsidy bill was defeated in the house committee on merchant marine and fisheries. As the committee had no au
thority to sit during the sessions of the house, and as objeotion was made
to granting thi3 authority, a vote on the Grosvenor mail subsidy substitute wag prevented and the committee adjourned to meet at the close of the day's session: The Democratic members of the
committee generally voted for the senate bill, and its defeat was accomplished by Republican members. The senate committee on finance agreed to report favorably the nominations of Postmaster General Cortelyou to be secretary of treasury and James R. Garfield, commissioner of corporations, to be secretary of interior. The vote 'on both was unanimous, members of the committee assenting to the view that the president should be allowed to select his own advisers. The committee also agreed to recommend the confirmation of Arthur S. Statter of Washington to be assistant secretary of treasury. The house after passing a few measures of local interest resumed consideration of the fortification bil Senator Spooner resumed his discussion of the Brownsville resolution, his speech on this subject having been interrupted by adjournment. He said he agreed that it is for congress to determine the oath of enlistment of land and sea forces, the duration of term, the pay, the method of punishment and many other regulations for the government of the soldiers, but he could not agree that the commander-in-chief is in time of peace or war
Tinder the supreme control of congress. The constitution makes the president commander-in-chief of the army without defining his functions, declared Spooner. He read from a decision in the Swayne case in the court of claims that congress can reduce the military forces, but so long as there is a force the commander-in-chief is supreme. This decision set forth the view that the powers of congress and the powers of the commander-in-chief are supreme, and that one can not encroach on the power of the other.

INTO RECEIVER'S HANDS
GreensTvoro, 'N. C, Jan. 151 JBC&-3 Boyd, In United States court, appointed Charles Cone of this city receiver for the Odell Manufacturing company, a big cotton mill at Concord, N. C. The complaint asking for the receiver was filed by attorneys representing the Continental Color and Chemical company of New York and other creditors. The liabilities are given as $ 500,000, and assets estimated at $1,000,000. This action is said to be a direct result of the failure of three big mills at Bessemer City, in which stockholders of this company are interested. The receiver is authorized to continue operating the mill.
