The following Is tafcen from an English history printer! in London during the last decade of the eighteenth century: "The ship Bedford, Captain Moores, belonging in Massachusetts, arrived at the Downs on the 3d of February (1783), passed Gravesend and was reported at the custom house on the 6th. She was not allowed regular entry until some consultation had taken place between the commissioners of customs and the lords of council on account of many acts of parliament in force against the rebels of America. This 'was the first vessel which displayed the thirteen rebellious stripes of America in any British port." This vessel was a whale ship from New Bedford and undoubtedly was the flrst to carry the American flag on an errand of peace into a port of Great -Brttain.Housekeeper. The Omc of Adjectives. ' A party of schoolgirls had capital fun one day over a "game of adjectives. One of the girls, who was rather clever, wrote a little story about something that had happened at the'r school, and she was careful to use no adjectives. The story was not more than 300 words altogether, and where the adjectives should have been she left blanks. She did not show any one her paper, but she asked her companions oae after the other to supply her with adjectives for the nouns, which she told them haphazard, so that they might, not guess what the story was till ail the adjectives had been supplied, says Home Notes. Then she read the tale aloud, and the shouts of laugtiter from her companions showed tkat the game was a success. letter EntsBui. The letters which spell the name of a once great personage appear in. their order at the beginning of the first or second words, helping to form the following: well known eld sayings: What's In a name? All's well that ends well. A sitting hen never grows fat. Aim hih, and you'll never fall low. Virtue is its own reward. We never miss the water till the well runs dry. Return good for evil. Where there's a will there's a way. One swallow does not make a summer. New wine should not be put into old bottles. Answer. Washington. Price No Indication. There Is one consolation about th two great earthquakes which destroyed respectively the two great cities o San Francisco and Valparaiso, ant that is that they raised no seismk waves to speak of. This was because the earth tremors were wholly on land and did not extend beneath the bed of the ocean. II Is when this latter eventuality happen? that these terrible waves are created causing widespread havoc. For Instance, it was this kind oi ocean avalanche that engulfed Lisbon with 50,000 of its inhabitants, in 1755. and in 1883 a submarine earthquake started in the straits of Suuda a sc called "tidal" (seismic) wave that traveled twice around the globe and drown ed 35,000 people. In -1891 again a submarine earth quake threw up a wall of water seven ty feet high and more than 300 miles In length, which overwhelmed the greater portion of the Niphon island On this occasion 84,000 houses were swept away and 10,000 people lost their lives. Worse still was a huge wave which In 1868 wiped out of existence In a few minutes the cities of Areqnipa, Iqulque, Tacua and Chencha, drowning 25,000 persons and destroying property worth 00,000.000. Hie waters of th Pacific first retreated nearly half mile, then rushed forward with irresist Ible force, so that great ships were carried far Inland and there left high and dry for fixture generations to wonder at. v At Port Eoyal. Jamaica, again, many bouses were engulfed forty fathoms deep, with above 3000 of their Inhabitants, while about the same time an earthqueke-mede wave so completely demolished Catania, in Sicily, that of the tews atrd Its 18,000 inhabitant not a trace remained. Pearson's Weekly. Tae 8nocesful Ad. "Writer. Advertising requires versatility of a high order. To win success in this field a man must not only be able to cambine human Interest with the strictest accuracy of fact, but unless he Is a specialist in a certain line, taking up advertising commissions at intervals, he must be ready to cope with subjects of the most diverse character. Today he studies the methods of making cl ears and the many different kinds of tobacco that enter therein; tomorrow he whites a monograph oa enameled tin cansr Investigating the processes of making them In the factory, and the day after that his topic may be breakfast foods, taking him into investigations of starch, gluten, digestive func tions, diet and health and setting him unon a wearv hunt for synonyms to describe the "rich nutty flavor" that all breakfast foods are said to have. All the illustrative work of an-advertising artist must be so true to detail that It will pass the eyes of men who spend their lives making the things he pic tures. It was the manufacturer of a widely advertised specialty who, difficult to please in circulars, looked over the manuscript submitted by an advertising free lance with more approval than was Lis custom.
