Attractive end Novel Method of Seeing the Many Points of Interest In and Around Hampton Roads During the Jamestown Exposition.

Publishers Presa.l Norfolk; Va., Dec. 23. Parallel to the old proverb, that "Necessity is the mother of Inventions' is the mvtei saying, that "Expositions are tha originators of novel ideas." Celebration, which is to comemcrnte the three hundredth anniversary of the Grst permanent English speaking colony in America. Foremost among these attractions at the Jamestown Exposition will be the "Water Belt Line," an organized Company that will maintain a regular Bchedule of steamers, around and about the. waters of Hampton Roads and the adjoining tributaries that go to make up the famous "Tidewater Virginia." A Belt Line on land, with steam of trolley cars, is familiar to almost every city, but "Water Belt IJne," operating steamers instead of ca,rs is indeed a novel system of transportation. Owing to the fact that the Jamestown Exposition will b e the first Celebration of its kind, ever held in th's country, on deep water, there will be assembled in Hampton Roads, next year, the greatest Naval Pageant that the world has ever seen. Those assembled navies of all the respective cations, at anchor in the spacious hnrbor "in - front of the Exposition Grounds-will -Include every lype of fighting craft, from the smal!o3t and most obsolete gunboat to the largest and most formidable Man-of-War, af fording a splendid opportunity fo. the comparison of the naval strea?th of the various countries that are 10 participate, and to note the progress in Naval construction from its earliest stages. No section of the country is so hallowed by hlstory-maglng events a3 that part of Virginia, on Hampton Roads, whose shores are lined with historical points of interest, where the Jamestown Exposition will b2 held in 1907. Foremost among these landmarks is Old Point Comfort, as named by the first setlers because of the Fafe anchorage ' afforded by Its protected shores, for their storm tossed vessels. Here is also located Fort Monroe, the chief Artillery station of the Uniter States Government on the Atlantic Coast. With its grim old walls and winding moat, Fort Monroe Is one of the most picturesque as wen as formidable mili-

One of the most noticeable features of the heavy local traffic on the Interurban and railroads during the past week, has been that probably fourfifths of the tickets sold In a twenty mile radius of Richmond have all been for this city. But few of the people In Itichmond have gone out of town to do their heavy Christmas shopping. The farmers and residents of the smal

ler towns and in many instances the larger county seats, recognizes the high standard set by the Richmond merchants, hence the great inpouring here. The streets were crowded all day Saturday and until a late hour at night, by persons from the country and small towns around Richmond. The stores were also crowded and all the merchants reported a record breaking business. Only one day remains for Xmas. shopping and the merchants are expecting the largest days business of the year. The! majority of Monday's business howev- j er, will oe done Dy tnose residents 01 the city who have put off their shop ping until the eleventh hour. A Big Xmas. Tree. Milton. Ind., Dec. 23, (Spl.) Santa Claus and Mother Goose Is the title of the cantata to be given at the Christian church Tuesday night. The public is invited to attend. No admission fee will be charged, but a free offering will be taken. A Xmas tree will be a feature of the entertainment. York- j town, where Cornwallis surrendered j to the Contintental Army, is only a ! two hours ride by either boat or train ! from the Exposition. Hero can be ; seen the monument erected by the . Government in honor of the great j victory of the American forces. The i first custom house ever erected in America is also located at Yorktown. ' thln stones throw of the Expo-j sl"1n site can be-seen the remains . earthworks, thrown up. by the Confederate array in their defense! against the union troops in the bat tle at Sewells Point. The scene of: the fanious battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac is also close by, t the fight having taken place only a ! few hundred yards out in Hampton Roads, from the grounds of the Exposition. These and many other points of interest that line the shores of this renowned harbor, together with the varied water features of the Exposition, including not only the Naval Display, but motor boat carnivals yacht races and submarine contests, will make it imperative for visitors to the Ter-Centennial, to make this trip around the harbor, that has been out by the "Water Belt Line" before they can truthfully say that they have seen everything in connection with this attractive exposition. The company is under the general management of II. P. McGarvle, a well known concessionaire who has made expositions a study. A unique and valuable feature of his plan, is that the tickets will be issued with coupons admitting of stopover privileges at any or all of the points enroute, allowing the passvgers to take any of the following steamers to complete the trip. ..The round trip will start from the Companies own wharf boat on the water front of Norfolk and touch such places as Portsmouth, Newport News, Old Toint Comfort, the exposition grounds and back again to Norfolk, and will in no sense be on the order of the average "cheap excurson' but will be conducted along the very finest lines, especial attention being paid to women and children and no liquors being sold aboard or readyism permitted. Beside the regular belt line trips, the company will operate daily excursions' to such places as Jamestown Island, the actual cite of the first permanent settlement, where nothing remaining but the old ruined church tower, so familiar in history.
