THE OPPOSITION NEWSPAPERS SAY THE ACT IS INSTRUMENT
OF OPPRESSION TO AMUSE THE
JACOBINS. Publishers Press.J Paris, Dev.. i'he entire Republican pres3-expresses the greatest satisfaction at the enactment by a vote of 413 to 166 of the government's hill amending the church and state separation law of 1905. The papers dwell with special gratification on the fact that the various Republican groups unitedly supported the government in the new step it felt compelled to take in view of the intransigence of the Vatican authorities. Opposition organs indulge in the most violent denunciation of the new measure. The Figaro likens the government to e. "cowardly bandit, manufacturing a .uw engine for oppressing the defenseless in order to amuse its Jacobins." A person in close attendance on Cardinal Richard, speaking In his name, i3 quoted as plainly foreshadowing a papal veto of the new legislation which is classed as "more unsatisfactory than the preceding measures, and nothing' more nor less than aj law of reprisal." He also declared that so long as the government declines to negotiate with the pope a modus Vivendi is impossible. Offer Help to French Clergy. New Orleans, Dec. 22. An offer of pecuniary assistance to the French clergy from the Catholic clergy of Louisiana was mailed to Cardinal Richard, archbishop of Paris. The offer was made in a letter written by Archbishop Blenk of New Orleans to accompany a memorial to Cardinal RicharjJ, signed by every Catholic priest In Louisiana. Archbishop Blenk
said: "So as to give to these expressions of sympathy a practical and substantial character let me add" that the
clergy of Louisiana Is ready at the least notice from your eminence to help pecuniarly, within means, in the maintenance of the French clergy." The memorial denounced the acts of the French government.
