INVESTIGATOR FINDS THAT AT
OSYL, A PREPARATION OF ARSENIC. IS EFFICACIOUS AS A

Berlin, x.csjr Robert Koch, who resigned the presidency of the Berlin Medical society in May to continue his investigation in equatorial Africa of the so-called "sleeping
sickness," in his official report to the
imperial ministry of the interior says
he found that atosyl. a preparation of
arsenic, is as efficacious in the treatment of the sickness as quinine is in malaria. Writing from Sese, Victoria Nyanza, under various dates previous to Dec. 1, the professor says he discovered from study of the habits of the glossina palpalis, one of the insects disseminating "trypanosmes," as he terms the germs, that it lives in the undergrowth or on water plants growing near the margins of the lakes, and feeds on dead water, fowl, fish and crocodiles, especially the latter. In order to study the glessina palpal s and the disease simultaneously, the prcfessor availed himself of the offer dude by the British government to pi&ce at his disposal an empty mission house at Bougali, Seze islands, northwestward of Victoria Nyanza, where there are 900 patients being treated with subcutaneous injections of a half gramme solution ef alosyl. Professor Koch has had patients under observation two or three months, but on account of the fear of relapses, Professor Koch concludes that they must remain two or three months longer under observation before he is certain of having accomplished permanent cures. Six hours after an injection "trypanosmes" were still present in the system of a patient, but after eight hours the germs disappeared. The malady attacks particularly men in the prime of life, and the mortality
from the sickness has been so great that whole villages are inhabited by women and children only. The population of the Seze Islands in 1902 was 30,000, now 12,000.

The Man From the West Gennett. Modern stagecraft has apparently
by no means reached its limitation, for each secceeding year sees a decided advancement in the manner iu
which the plays of today are produc
ed; not only, does this apply to the
scenic investure, but to the sartorial embellishment as well. Details are
much more looked after than formerly, and all those little things that
go to make the lasting success of a
play, and the perfection in production. That the management of "The
Man From the West," Messrs Crandall and Mtchell have studied all this little detail work in connection with their magnificent production can be readily seen by a visit to the Gennett
next Saturday, matinee and night. It is a production of degree and elaborateness that will excite wonder. Strong and pleasing specialties are
introduced throughout.
Modjeska Gennett. Mme. Helena Modjeska's farewell
appearance in this city at the Gen
nett. Monday evening, December 31,
being as it will, the last lime we will
be privileged to enjoy an art as rare as any that the modern stage has
known, is an occasion which is com
manding the attention of every element of the community, those who attend the theatre but seldom taking almost as great interest in it as are regular patrons of the play. The reason is not far to seek. Such art
as Modjeska's, while thoroughly entertaining, is on a far higher plane than the acting that is done for mere amusement. It appeals to the intellect, touches the highest sensibil
ities, stimulates ambition, clarifies pride, emboldens self reliance, raises the soul above the sordid and gives
clearer view of life and man's re
lation thereto.
IPublishers Press. Savan..." , j. Two fire men were killed and Assistant Chief Munro of the fire department and another fireman injured by an explosion at a fire here in the fireworks factory of Joseph Carbo and John Niva, Italians. Munro died at the hospital. Carbo and Niva were engaged in lounting torpedoes. One dropped and eaused the explosion of the rest. Car
bo and Niva suffered painful injuries,!
those of Carbo being the more serious. Munro was asked to investigate, it being suspected that the proprietors had more explosives in the place than the ordinances permit. Munro and three firemen, Eddy, O'Leary and Daley, entered the building, and Frederick Chitty16, also crowded his way in. The firemen were speculating as to whtt could have caused the explosion. "I'll show you how It happened," re
marked Chltty, and he threw a dyna
mite cap to the floor. Three explosions followed in quick succession. The building collapsed and the detonation were heard all over the city. - Window glasses were broken in the Neighborhood and debris was senjf flying in every direction. Fire foowed the

Vaudeville at the Phillips. After a rest of a week vaudeville
will again be resumed at the New
Phillips on Monday afternoon with a
bill that is of a most promising nature, both as to the c -lity and the
diversity of its arrangement. Miss
Grace Miller will be at the piano, Cal
Lankert will sing the illustrated
songs and the Philoscope will show
three of the most interesting and up-to-date films. In addition to these regular features Spedden and Herson will do eccentric comedy singing and talking; Tulsa, the girl with the black eyes, will have a character singing act; Cunningham and Smith will present "The Shoplifter," introducing their singing dog, Zero, and Hugh V. and Bessie Lee will appear to "A Roman Sybil's Dream." The Cilms to be shown by the Philoscope ere "New Brother." "A Gluton Taken for a Thief , and "Oh, That Limburger." As next week is one in which the public will be in search of amusement, the ' most liberal of patronage is expected.
