A FALL OF "BEAUTIFUL"

HEAVIEST OF THE YEAR. Snow Comes Last Night and Kept Coming Throughout the Night Cold er Weather is Promised for the Week. '

The merchants of the city, as well as other residents, no doubt, awoke this morning with gratified feelings as they noticed the ground covered with a beautiful coat of snow. Last night about nine o'clock a light fall started soon covered the ground. It snowed spasmodically all night. The merchants of the city and county have reason to be gratified at the fall last night as the past week has been extremely dull, in trade circles owing to the warrh weather. The wrnther man promises still colder vether for Tuesday, which means f it people will begm to think more 1? Christmas and will therefore do r- ? buying . thfn tllpy would have cl u3 under ordinary circumstances.

I Publishers Press. Washington, Dec. 1C. Although there Is no danger of war with Ja'pan it Is significant that in many of the official reports Issued :.from the war department and , navy department this fall, certain phases of Japans operations against Russia are shown to be constantly in the mind's

of the war officials.

This is true of the chief of artillery who in his annual report, just made

public, impresses upon congress the

Imperative necessity of completing the elaborate system of. coast defense. Speaking of the establishment of

a rapid ana accurate range iinaing

system, estimated to cost over $8,000,000, attention is called. to the results of the naval battle between Japan and Russia in the Tushlma

Straits.

"With, this illustration before us,"

the report continues, "there can be

no possible excuse for a failure to provide every emans for the devel

opment of the hitting capacity of these guns and mortars to the greatest possible extent."

The estimated cost of search lights

necessary for the gun defense of all fortified harbors of the United States is placed at a little less than $3,000,-

000. "As it would take several years

to manufacture these

lights were f uhd for their purchase

available now" the report says, "the

necessity for an appropriation to cover their purchase is apparent." The report next touches upon the Japanese war in emphasizing the value of sub-marine mines as an element of harbor defense. The terrible destruction wrought ' by sub-marine mines at Port Arthur and places Js noted. It Is estimated that a little more than three million and a. half of dollars will be required to complete the present system.

Publishers Press.J Muncie, Ind., December 16. A ferret that refused longer to be fooled by imitation rats and the prospects of alluring fish heads and other things

that failed to materialize when it completed its job according to specifications, broke up, temporarily, the improvement work of the Central Union telephone Company in the business district yesterday afternoon, by going on strike. The ferret had been trained to go through the company's underground conduits from one street corner to the next, with a light cord fastened to the neck, to which was attached a cable that later was drawn by work men the entire length. No other way of lasing the cables was known, and as the wsupply of rats, one of which was usually sent through the conduit just ahead of the ferret, was exhausted, the , company did not know what to do. Finally a hurry-up message to a livery barn resulted in obtaining a

Wii irkua Come Trae. There is a scientific explanation of the fact that illness, at least, can be foretold in dreams. The theory is that when a man is dreaming bis mind is more sensitive thnn in his waking hours, for the simple reason that his actual surroundings are not engaging any of the mind's attention. Thus It happens that when some disease has set in, the man awake does not feel it in Its earliest stages, although the active mind in a sleeping body does feel it. The sleeper dreams, let us say, that he is suffering some complaint of the leg, and two or three days later, the disease having developed, he finds that he really has got a bad attack of rheumatism. Harvey, who discovered the circulation of the blood, records having had a dream in which a bee stung him in his left thigh, on a place where a couple of days later appeared an ugly ulcer. The ulcer must have been developing, of course, at the time of the dream, but That the man In full consciousness could not perceive the man with only an active mind 1. e., dreaming easily notices.

Miss Josephine Corbin, of ' New York, a home missionary in New York, and who has worked in the Foreign Girls Home, in that city for the past three years addressed the members of the Grace M. E. church last night on the "Work Among Immigrants." The address was very Interesting and entertaining and at the same' time gave much foor for thought. I Miss Corbin traced the immigrant from the time he was landed in Ellis Island, the government immigrant station, until the time he was placed at work. She pictured the life of the immigrants, homeless, friendless and home sick, as they arrived at the Ellis . Island station, and the dangers which lay in wait for them, namely the human sharks at the immigrant houses of infamy, also the sharkers who were after the men in order to get their meager supply of the worlds goods.' She showed the work in the immigrants house about the city and the good which they were accomplishing in the manipulation of the foreigner's affairs, when they first landed in this country. Miss Corbin said the solution to the work afTong the foreigners in this country was the kindergarten, as their cullvation rested with the. children, and therefore she advocated kindergartens in every foreign ' settlement In New Yorlt.
