Hickory nutters must lorego the pleasure of their hunts this fall or come home in the evening embellished with "stick tights" and Spanish needles, and nothing else to show for the weary climbs over hills and valleys. ' Most of those whose autumn favorite pastime is nutting will content themselves this fall . in the walnut groves and where the butternuts rattle from their spreading branches after the frosts. They know that the hickory nr.t crop, is a failure and none of the old time bumpers for the trees have been constructed. There are some of the boys in the city who have not learned that there are none of these coveted nuts and they have already gone to the country. IPublishers' PressJ Chicago, Oct. 23. The wheat market was firm on a moderate amount of trading. Commission houses were good buyers and receipts in the Northwest were smaller than had been expected. The unsettled weather was also a feature. The corn market was quiet but firm, the wet weather throughout the corn belt being the principal factor. The oats market was firm on coering by shorts. The provisions market was easier because of a decline in the prices of live hogs. (By O. G. Murray's Special Wire.) OPEX. CLO. Wheat. Irc 73-72 73 -May 77- 78 Corn. Dec 42 M 42 May 43-U 43 O.ts. This was brought on, I think, by the trying nature of my work. Doan's Kidney Pills were recommended for similar cases and I secured a box from A. G. Luken's drug store. The adventure of a contributor to Science lasted but a minute, but it made up in intensity of terror what it lacked in duration of time. The writer tells his own story: Some years ago while I was making researches in an excavation near Frankfort, O., the center wall of the mound was undermiued by the workmen, and I was struck by si mass of falling earth. I had just stooped to examine a small bone which had been uncovered when earth to the amount of several cart loads dropped ou me. No one else was iu the excavatiou, the men having gone to" the top of the mound. The falling mass kuocked me backward, and I fell with my head aud shoulders ou a small heap of earth. The falling wall of earth looked biack to me, an 1 I well renieiubcr the rush of wind It brought. At first I felt little pain, only intense pressure, which forced the buttons of my costume partly inside my flesh. My watch was pressed tight against two ribs which were broken. The skin on my forehead seemed cut, but it was the pressure of my hat forcing the flesh between the straw. The knife in my pocket seemed burning hot. Just under the small of my back was a large clod which gave me unendurable pain, as if my spine wrere slowly breaking. Then It stopped, and I felt nothing. Thoughts raced through my head like lightning, thoughts of the past, present r.nd future. I remember trying in vain to move a hand or a finger. I was perfectly motionless. My chest could not be inflated, and the downward pressure had forced the air out of my lungs. 1 could move my cliin and open and shut my mouth. I tried to keep my mouth closed to prevent its being filled, but it instinctively opened, and the earth fell in. Then the assurance of strangling came to me, but I did not much care. It was just sixty seconds, the surveyor said, before the men reached me end I felt the earth move slightly. A shovel struck my scalp and cut me. It felt like redhot iron. When my head was uncovered the pressure on my body was so great the blood was forced to my head until my rescuers feared my veins would burst. I observed everything, but could not move. The partial paralysis lasted several days. I have never wholly recovered from the effects of my adventure. I cannot enter a cave or stand near a bank of earth without terrible Eensations.
