Provisions Live Stock Grain and ' Stock' Markets

RICHMOND-J ARKETS Tomatoes, as far as Richmond 13 concerned, are practically' a thing of the past for this season. There were only a few bushels on sale and dealers said they did not expect to have any more. Although the market has been firm, prices have not been nearly as high as at the beginning of the season, when homegrown tomatoes brought $3.50 to $1.00 a bushel. Total sales of tomatoes this season have been about average, in spite of the fact that, at the beginning of the season, it was said that there would, .not, be as many tomatoes this year as heretofore. Receipts, 5,000 hogs, 1,250 cattle and 400 sheep, against 4,709 hogs, 1,238 cattle and 449 sheep a week ago and 7,410 hogs, 1,656 cattle and 54 sheep a year aero. There was a slight decrease in the receipts of hogs compared with tne last two davs. but no improvement in the demand and with the supply emial to reauirements buyers were bearish and prices declined 10c in thfi averaee. Some or the light nogs were 15c lower compared with yester day's best sales. Active for Cattle. For a Thursday, receipts of cattle wre relatively larger than heretofore this week. There was also a larger proportion of good kinds and tne supnlv was nearer equal to requirements than it has been. There was a good active demand for fat steers of practically all weights at strong prices, compared with yesterday. In an explosion in the mine of the Springfield CollerJes Co., north of this city, two shotfirers were killed. The victims were John Stadfen, 45, and Thomas Hiscock, 44, both of Springfield. The rescuers went into the mine but had some difficulty in reaching the victims wing to gas. Police Attack Wwkmen. Ufa, Rucsia.'Oct. 11. While the police of this town were arresting an agitator in the Svemski factory they were surrounded and attacked by a large number of workmen. After a short fight the workmen were beaten off. Several guards were killed or wounded and the factory is now occu-j piedjy troops.

Cattle There was a very fair run of cattle arrived toda3r, and in addition to nearly 500 head of cattle carried over from yesterday, the supply was a most liberal one for this time in the week. Sales of the good and choice fat beeves and desirable quality stockers and feeders exhibited " no essential change from yesterday's average prices, while the half fat and plain stuff was badly neglected and simply at the mercy of buyers bids for outlet. The vacancy in the office of vice governor of the Philippines can not await the conclusion of the duties here of Charles E. Magoon, who is to succeed Mr. Taft as provisional governor of Cuba. This is a great dlsappointmen-t to Mr. Taft, who desired that Mr. Magoon take up his work soon in the Philippines. It is believed that an appointment as vice governor of the Philippines will be made immediately on Mr. Taft's return to Washington. Grain Elevator Burns. Springfield, 111., Oct. 11. The big grafn elevator of George L. Barnett & Co., at Barnett, burned, together with 30,000 bushels of grain. The loss is about $50,000; insurance $30,000. The fire is supposed to have been caused by sparks from a locomotive. Peonage Charged. Helena, Ark., Oct. 11. The trial of Thomas H. Musgrove of Mississippi county on the charge of peonage, has begun in the federal court here. It is alleged (hat he enticed Marion S. Emmons and Adenhail Vitt of St. Louis to his plantation near Karfield, Ark., in 1905, and held them virtual prisoners, forcing them to work and humiliated them. Musgrove, who is wealthy, denies all allegations and has engaged the best legal talent obtainable to fight the case. Stockyards Licked. Up. : Columbia, Tenn., Oct. 11. The stockyards here, together with 115 head of horses and mules, 17,000 bushels of wheat and a quantity of oats, hay and machinery were destroyed by fire. The loss is $57,000. Candidate Will Withdraw. Wilkesbarre, Pa,, Oct. 11. E. A. Coray, candidate for congress on the Lincoln party ticket from the Eleventh Pennsylvania district, has announced his intention to present his resignation. He has issued a call to the county committee to assemble next week, when he will make known his reason for resigning. In Pursuit of His Wife. Havre, Oct. 11. General Ouchakoff of the Russian army, la pursuit of his wife, who is fleeing from her husband in the company of Gabriel Essipoff; has arrived here on board the steamer La Provence.
