RICHMOND MARKETS
Grapes continued to lead the fruit sales In Richmond yesterday. Prices were firm, owing to the strong demand. Tokays are selling freely with Malagas not far behind. Apples sold In larger quantities than at any previous time this season. Prices hold firm, although receipts are unusually lareg. Peaches were of poorer quality. Pears were in fair demand. Cabbage sales have been heavy, Holland seed stock being the favorite even at advance over prices of domestic seed. Onions are in heavy demand with the higs-priced whites selling almost as freely as the cheaper reds and yellows.
THE LOCAL MARKETS. (The prices quoted below are those paid by J. M. Eggemeyer, Main & Fourth streets, for produce, vegetables and fruits. This gives the farmers and gardeners the accurate quotations for their products; also gives the merchants of the smaller towns the wholesale prices paid in Richmond on all fruits, etc., bought from Commission men.) 1,042 cattle and 112 sheep a year ago.
Receipts of hogs were smaller than
they have been at this time In week recently, and with rather
good demand both from packers and
shippers the market opened at strong

and subsequently for a few late
rivals there was continued active
rnmnetition ' and some of the last
sales were made at the highest pric
es of the day.
Cattle There was a falling off
receiots of cattle. This was surpri
ing to the buying side, and as a result
the market was lively compared with the close of last week so far as good
fat cattle were concerned, and prices
were strong. The situation as re
cards the common to medium cattle
was apparently no better, and prices
were unsatisfactory as compared
with those for good cattle.
There was a fair local demand for
feeding cattle at steady prices, bull

than yesterday.
Sheeti There was a small supply of
sheep and lambs, barely enough to
accommodate local butchers an
there was active competition for the
offerings, which sold at strong pric
es generally and in cases 25c higher

Cincinnati, Oct. 2 Cattle The i market today was favored with a right
good demand, although it is Tuesday, when the attendance of local dealers is light, as a rule. There was a strong feeling on account of just moderate receipts, and anything on the desirable order in the butcher and stocker lines went out at full steady
to strong prices governing the market
yesterday. Plain and common
grades were about steady, though
quiet. Milch cows steady.
Bulls Moderate receipts and mar
ket about steady, with a fair demand.
Calves Good, light fat veal calves steady and active. Common and rough heavy calves quiet and easy to
a shade lower.
Hogs Although the early run of
hogs was light, buyers held off .and
bidding was lower in anticipation of
more liberal and ajnple receipts from late trains, which was the case, and the market opened sluggish, with packing and butcher grades selling a nickel under yesterday, while light and shipping hogs opened steady and
pigs a dime lower.
' Sheep and Lambs Receipts of sheep and lambs were light today and market active at steady to strong
prices.

Publishers Press Chicago, Oct. 2. Sentiment in the wheat pit was inclined to bearishness, but active support by a leading bull helped to check the declining tendency. The weakening influences were lower cables, increased receipts in the Northwest and excellent weather conditions for the movement. The corn market was bearishly affected by the easier tone of wheat. Oats showed weakness, but trading was light. Trading in provisions was quiet and the tone of the market was steady.

Publishers Pressl New York, Oct. 2. Gains were in a large majority in the changes resulting from an active opening in the stock market, but several issues showed the effect of realizing. Reading was a feature, with running sales of 19,000 shares at 154 and 154 14, compared with 153 Y last night and a subsequent advance of an additional fraction. Wisconsin Central preferred advanced 5 points, the common and St. Louis & San Francisco second preferred l1, Brooklyn Rapid Transit li and Atchison, Northern Pacific, Atlantic Coast Line Rock Island, Amalgamated Copper and Smelting about a point. Distillers Securities receded a point and and Canadian Pacific and Wheeling & Lake Erie large fractions. Uniform Upward Movement. Confident absorption of various leading stocks soon induced a uniform movement upward. The weight of realizing in Reading, Atchison and Union Pacific, which drove them down a point from the highest, had its effect after a time, and the market receded. Aggressive buying of United States Steel began, but it did not infuse any strength into the other leaders. The noon rally in the important stocks was not extended, liberal off- j erings of Reading, Union Pacific and Atchison coming on the market and j driving prices down again. Some ac- j tivity developed in the low-priced Gould stocks at higher prices. Evansville & Terre Haute preferred gave way 5, Great Northern preferred 2 and Sugar and U. S. Rubber 1. Corn Products preferred was a point better and Locomotive preferred 1 1-4.
