Thanksgiving will not be without its turkeys this year," said a huckster. "Last year there were not as many turkeys as the people wanted and prices were entirely too high. People plant larger crops the year after a. large crop, thinking that the following yield will also break records, or plant larger crops the year after a small crop, hoping for high prices to continue. It's the same way with raising animals and fowls. If something doesn't happen to the young birds before Thanksgiving, there will be plenty of turkeys in the country." Country prices on turkeys are from Sc to 10c a pound, alive. Poultry, in general, is in good demand. Spring chickens and fowls are costing SV&c to lOc in the country, and are to be had in quantities just about large enough to meet the demand.

The freeholders of Hudson couiitj are contemplating treating sections of the country roads with a preparation of crude oil to preserve them from the effect of the great traffic of automobiles, says a Patersou (X. J.) correspondent of the New York Sun. Unless it be the roads from New York to Philadelphia, no county roads in the state are more used by autoists than the roads in Hudson county, which lead to Greenwood-lake. Lake Hopatcong. Echo lake and other inland New Jersey pleasure ground?. The weight of the machines and the dust they create are continually laying bare the underdressing of. the roads, making it compulsory on the freeholders to keep repair gangs out almost continually. The oil is said to act as a binder and will prevent the disintegration of the top dressing by the heavy tires of touring machines. It always looks so foolish to see another fellow suffering witli its toothache. We don't notice other people's faults so much when they are paying close tanfion to our vi"-a:es. " Torture by Savages. 'Publishers' Prss1 Cincinnati, Sept. 28. Receipts 922 cattle, 2.35S hogs, 1,023 sheep. Cattle There was no life in the cattle market. A steadier to firmer tone, however, was apparent to values of the good and choice fat grades, but no advance is quotable. One car load of choice fat steers weighing right at 1,400 lbs, the best here today, sold at $5.35. Plain and common grades of butcher and thin light and mean, trashy stock cattle continue neglected and very slow of sale. Hogs Although the receipts of hogs were only fair, an easier and downward tendency to prices was apparent from the start on .account' of yesterday's sharp break in Western markets and the market here began with all grades selling at a nickel decline from yesterday's prices.

The methods used in obtaining funds to build "subscription roads" in Boone county, Mo., were described a few days ago by W. B. Cauthorn, an engineer iu Columbia who helped and who directed the building of some of the finest highways in th.; part of Missouri, says the Kansas City Star. "I don't think Americans like the toll idea," Mr. Cauthorn paid, "especially when they are paying taxes too. The subscription road is more popular than the toll road. In ! preparing to build the Columbia-Mexico free highway the promoters started with nothing except confidence. They were laughed at, but they said, 'Let us build one mile and you'll want twenty. And that was true. The county court subscribed half the amount needed. The property owners adjacent to the first mile put up the remainder. "That was the start. It attracted others living farther away, and they offered to subscribe for a mile, so that the first contributors were given two miles of highway for the price of one. Others joiuetl in, and the work continued, the cost to each subscriber being what he paid for one mile, and yet he had the use of the whole road. It is to be extended this summer in the same way until it is thirteen miles long, all free highway. The highest subscription outside that from the county court was $100. The sums ranged from $5 to $100. Farmers were allowed to give $30 in work. One man who owned sixty acres gave $100 and worked it out He said the road added 23 per cent to the value of his land." "We've leeu hauling rock," a farmer said. "Some of us have got plum tired waiting for laws. We're going to build two roads this season, each five miles long, by the subscription plan.- They'll be free roaiLi. The county will contribute one-half the -ot. The more we get of these roads the more the farmers demand them: I know one man who gave $1,000, and he owns only 300 acres. That's the effect of road agitation in a community. We get subscriptions from abutting property and from benefited districts. Every one who goes near the road is asked to help, and they all do it." The taan wtio wins is his own excuse for occupying the earth. Most women insist on having their own way ( and then get mad at some man because ka did jxot restrain them.

Publishers' PressJ Chicago, Sept. 28. The wheat market here opened quiet, but firm. The influences that tended to create bullish sentiments were firm cables and unsettled weather in the Northwest. Offerings were light. Trading in the corn pit was dull and the tone of the market was steady. Local receipts of oats were under the estimated amount, and this had a strengthening effect on the market. Trading was quiet. Pro visions held steady, helped by light receipts of live hogs. The volume of trading was small.

As s. grreen feed for soiling that is, cutting and feeding green or for pasture rape stands unequal ed among crops suitable, for swine. It should be sown ?ii rows two feet apart on stnbble, fallow or well rotted sod at the rate of three pounds per acre. It may be sown any time, as long as there remain six weeks of growing weather before severe frosts are to be expected. If intended to be pastured the pigs should be turned in before the rape comes up to the top of their shoulders. No greater area should be given than they are likely to keep down to that height or lower. If not pastured or cut too close to the ground it will keep on growing as long as the growing season lasts. Greater returns may be expected from soiling than from pasturing a given area. Feeding pigs will generally make more rapid gains when it is being fed to them in moderate quantities in pens than when at pasture on it. Breeding stock are likely to do better when they can use it as pasture. Feeding pigs receiving all the rape they will eat on rape pasture should receive somewhat less meal than they would if in their pens. From one-third to five-sixths of the regular ration should be fed; the more rapid the gain desired, of course, the heavier the ration. J. II. Grisdale, Canada.
