RICHMOND MARKETS
It seems about an even race for popularity between Worden and Concord grapes in Richmond groceries now. Sales of both varieties are large, Wordens leading one' day and Concords the next, and so on. There has been practically no change in prices. Peaches were in small demand, with supplies of Michigan fruit fairly large. Prices, as a result, were as low as they have been for some time. Cranberries are more plentiful and are being sold freely in barrel lots. California lemons are in demand, their quality being much higher than that of the Messinas on sale. Prices continue about steady. Demand for beets is better than it lias been. The market on celery, radishes, turnips, tomatoes, lettuce and green bean3 is not changed, either in price or sales. Onions are sellng well. , THE LOCAL MARKETS.(The prices quoted below are those paid by J. M. Eggemeyer, Main & Fourth streets, for produce, vegetables and fruits. The possession of land is regarded with, almost siiperstitiouat veneration by the peaeantaof Russia. A parallel of this feeling is found in the eastern tale of Nasr-ed-Dln Hodga. who met a peasant ooe day 'with a donkey, over whose back hung two sacks, one filled with stones, the other with wheat, the stones having Jieen added to balance the wheat. "Why not divide the wheat into two parts Instead?" suggested Nasr-d-Din Hodga. Delighted with tlie idea, the peasant did as he wa;' advisad and hunj.Jfiie two sacks 0 wheat over the donkey's back. "And where are your lands. , O wise stran ger?" he asked humbly. "I have nlaads," answered the other. "Your e tate. then, and your palaces?" Inqulr ?d the peasant. "I have none," sr.; tbe other. "Then your houses,- yoc gardens. your orchards?" persisted th man. amazed. "I have none of thess," sinned the sage. "tYhatr cried the ei raged peasant. "Do you. who have n lands and no possessions, presume t give advice to me?" And he unloads the donkey, rearranged the wheat an-: stones as before and proceeded on hi way. A Scientific Wonder. CHICAGO MARKETS
IPublishers Press! Chicago, September 24. The wjieat market was strong, on a good general demand by commission houses and pit traders. Offerings were light. The corn market opened easy. There was considerable selling on account of increased local receipts. A leading commission house was a heavy seller of the September option. The oats, market was steady. The market lacked features, and trading was not large. The provisions market was strong, chiefly -because of a 5lc advance in the price of live hogs. Trading was light. (By O. G.
