In the State ' were in a stampede to
repudiate him. The fatal utterances
or the .Peerless one since his re

quickly. Indiana Democrats are sim
ply following in the footsteps of their
brethern everywhere. The Cincinna
ti Enquirer, one of the dyed-in-the
wool Bryan organs that It was until
recently, pays attention to the Indi
ana tormoil by printing the fol
lowing Indianapolis dispatch In Its
Sunday issue: "That William J. Bryan's declaration In favor of Government owner
ship of railroads will probably split the Democratic party almost as widely as his 16-to-l theory in 1S96. is indicated by the expression of a num
ber of prominent Indiana Gold Demo
crats, who said they did not stand
for it.
A few weeks ago they were hailing
Bryan as the conservative candidate, and they indorsed him in the state convention, under the impression
that he would lead them along conservative lines. A number of lead
ers said tonight that the railroad
ownership plank has started already
an exodus of Democrats that will hurt the party in the present cam
paign.
A number also predicted that the party will never stand by the Indorse
ment of Bryan as a Presidential candidate.
Sterling R. Holt, Chairman of State Committee in 1S96, said that Bryan
has made one of the greatest politi
cal blunders of the age in declaring for Government ownership of railroads, and that his action was un
democratic and impractical.
M. A. Ryan, Chairman of the
Speakers Bureau last year, and oth
er leaders who have been staunch
Bryan men. also stated that the Gov
ernment ownership idea will not go
in this state.
Under the circumstances it is like?
ly that there will be no further effort to arrange a special trip for Bryan in Indiana this year. Sterling R. Holt said: "The Democratic party ought not to waste any more time with him. It has lost

Morocco and into the jurisdiction of the United States.

A Royal Name.
Before the heir to the German throne had been in the world long enough to
know whether he was going to like it or not they broke the news to him that
his name was William.
Having in prospect the job of run ning so large a country as Germany, it was not necessary to band him one of
those continued-in-our-next names so popular with royalty that Is obliged to
Impress the neighbors In order to carry out the bluff. It can generally be depended on that the length of a royal name Is In Inverse ratio to the size of the kingdom ver which the kid expects to rule. If It is a power of the first class plain Bill will do, but if It Is one of those toy kingdoms that a race horse man can put in hjs vest pocket you can depend on it that his folks looked in the back part of the dictionary for the six or eight pages of names and said to him pleasantly, "They are all. yours.
