Grapes are in good demand on the local market. The real season for grapes begins about the middle of the . month, at which time New York grapes come to the local market. The local grape crop is large and most of the stock brought to the city is of excellent quality. k Demand for cantaloupes and water melons continues "without diminishing Tiptop cantaloupes have taken second place to Little Gems, on account, dealers say, of the spicy flavor of the smaller melons. Trade in common fruits and the general run of vegetables was about normal for Saturday, supply and demand being unchanged, and prices remaining steady.

Indianapolis, Ind., Sept. " 2. Re ceipts Sunday, 3,500 hogs, 400 cattle and 100 sheep, against 4,631 hogs 612 cattle and SS sheep a week ago. and 3,213 hogs, 313 cattle and 15 sheep a year ago. For the eight months ending Friday, a total of 1. 1S3.000 hogs arrived, representing an increase of 6.200 over the same time last year, and the actual receipts in August, 167.600 representing an in crease of over 19,000, compared with the same time a year ago. Compared with the supply hereto fore thi3 week there was a fair run of hogs, apparently as many as neces sary. At the start there was a fair demand from all sources, but ship pers were the strongest busers and sales in a general way were 5c higher than yesterday. There were only slight changes re corded in prices of hogs from one day to another this week and finally the market was higher than the close of last week. The first half of the week sa-w a reduction over 5c in the aver age, but subseouently with small sup plies the loss was recovered and at the extreme close of the week the av erage was 5c higher than the close of last week. As usual on the closing day of the week there was a small run of cattle and offerings, for the most part, were rather plain. Consequently, there was a lack of competition between buyers and trade was quiet. There was also only a moderate run of sheep and lambs and not enough in all departments to establish a range of prices. Most of the offerings were lambs of fair -to good quality, which sold at steady prices Good to choice heifers .. $4.355.10 STEERS Good to choice steers 1,300 lbs and upward $5 00 6.50 Common to medium steer?, 1,290 lbs. and upward Good to choice steers 1,150 to 1,250 lbs .... tPublishers" Press J Chicago, SepL 2. The wheat market Saturday was firm because of small deliveries on September contracts. The amount of these was smaller than had been expected, which fact caused active covering by shorts, with the result that the September option advanced nearly lc in price. This strength was reflected in other deliveries, but they did not advance materially. The feature of the market was the buying of September, which carried the price of December up to 748 0. The corn market opened easier on favorable weather reports and the probability of increased receipts. The market became firmer in the last half hour; The oats market was stronger, .but there was little trading. With an advance of 5c in the price of live hogs the provisions market was steady.

New York, Sept. 2. Monetary conditions are not satisfactory. Very likely the Xew York banks are considerably below the legal reserve, since last week's statement was made on declining averages and the banks this week lost considerable through crop and Sub-Treasury movements. It is exceedingly difficult., however, to obtain a correct idea of the banking resources of this community under present system. The method of reporting the condition of the Clear
ing House banks by averages is high Iy deceptive". Besides, the trust com panies are now an important ele ment in the banking situation, and hese only pubiish sCatesrnents cif. condition at prolonged intervals Again, our banking relations with Europe are becoming more and more intimate, and in event of insufficient accomodations in New York our big bankers now borrow as readily abroad as they do at home, thns ren dering it still more difficult to ob tain any satisfactory idea of loans and reserves as affecting New York Local Bankers have been placing con siderable confidence in Europe and in Secretary Shaw for assistance to avert any severe local stringency. Secretary Shaw has lare resources at his command and will probably do all within his power to afford legiti mate assistance for crop-moving, but will undoubtedly be very careful to avoid the charge of assisting specu lative movements In this city. What ever assistance, however, he may give to Western and Southern crop and business demands will to that extent diminish the strain upon New York. Further relief will be undoub tedly obtained by gold imports. Lon don, Paris, and Berlin are' all disposed to discourage American de mands as far as possible, but in spite of such resistance gold promises to come this -way in considerable sums Negotiations are being carried on abroad in a ouiet fashion, and it seems probable that the bulk of new supplies going to London will be di verted to this side.
