RICHMOND MARKETS Demana tor certain vegetables, a few fruits and melons keeps up without interruption, but. outside of this, trade is dull with no prospects of a change until cooler weather sets in. Tomatoes are down at wholesale to 40c and 50c a bushel, with all that can be handled coming in at those prices, rotatoes are selling better, prices being steady at ?1.9Q to $2.00 a barrel. There is a noticeable increase in demand for lemons, even at the high prices pjvailing. "People will drink lemonade these hot days," eald a commission man, "even if they do have to pay $7.00 a box for the jfruit." Teaches, plums, pears and apples sell fairly well. Demand for melons was stronger than at any time during the last two weeks. THE LOCAL MARKETS. (The prices quoted below are those paid by J. M. Eggemeyer, Main & Fourth streets, for produce, vegetables and fruits. Farmer the Manipulator. rubl i Tiers' Press! Chicago, August 23. Logan & Bryan say: In our judgment, the only man who can bull this wheat is the American farmer. lie has quit selling in the Southwest, as the very light receipts at St. Louis, Kansas City and Chicago show. Movement of new spring wheat is yet unimportant, and the No. 1 brings 3c over the September price in Minneapolis and is eagerly sought for by other millers. Publishers' Press Chicago, Aug. 24. The wheat market opened steady chiefly because of firm cables. Rains in the Northwest supplemented to a certain extent the firm reports from abroad. September opened a shade to lUc higher, sold at 71 c and declined to 71 c. December opened Vc to 'ic lower, advanced to 74-4c and declined to 74 c. The corn market opened . steady, September unchanged to a shade higher, and held steady for a time. The oats market was easier. (By O. G. Murray's Special Wire.) Wheat. Lime li'or Old Laud. No matter whether lime is needed to destroy mineral acids in the soil, or whether it is needed to destroy vegetable acids, or whether it is needed to supply the growing plant, the fact is that much old laud needs some lin-?. The top soil contains less lime than the subsoil because lime leaches. There may be a lot of lime iu the top soil that is inactive. Be the action what it may, the presence of more lime is demanded on millions of acres where clover has ceased to do well. Alva Agee in National Stockman. Xo Gain In Ve of Salt. It is supposed by many dairymen that the use of salt in liberal quantities adds to the profit of buttermaking, but recent tests at the Indiana station indicate that when salt is left out water takes the place of the salt and there is nothing gained by weight with the use of salt, but if sold entirely fresh is found to weigh as much for a given quantity of cream as when butter is salted. Skira Mills: am Fertilizer. A curious experiment was made this sumrqer near Ilalsey, N. J., where a lot of refuse skim milk was used as a top dressing for grass land. It is claimed that remarkable results were obtained, and that the grass was about seven times as vigorous as on adjoining fields on which milk was not used but which were dFessed with commercial fertilizers.
