Ix)cal dealers are preparing for the opening of the oyster season on Thursday, August 20. Reports from Baltimore are that the Chesapeake bay oyster beds were never in such good conditon at this time of the year. Dealers say that indications are that opening trade will be the heaviest? ever known here, and they are making preparations to handle from one-third to one-half more oysters the coming season than they

handled last season. Demand for fish continues so heavy that the small supplies coming to the local market are scarcely lajge en ough to fill all bills. Richmond people are eating more fish than in any previous summer, and supplies are ac tually smaller than for some years. at this time. The combination has made, and continues to make a very firm market. Dealers have been noti fied that, by the beginning of next week certain kinds of fish will be even scarcer and a general advance of c to lc a pound will be made at that time. THE LOCAL MARKETS. Publishers' Press! Indianapolis, Aug. "23. Receipts 8,000 hogs, 1,250 cattle and 400 sheep against 3,174 hogs, 1,458 cattle and 956 sheep a week ago, and 4,180 hogs 1,367 cattle and 793 sheep a year ago. Receipts of hogs were considerably smaller than they have been, but the supply was more than equal to requirements and prices were lower. There was a good demand from outside buyers, who took probably one

third of the early supply at a general reduction of 5c. Packers were not in the market early, but later cleaned up the supply at the decline. Sales ranged from $C.20fi 6.50, and the bulk of the supplies sold at $6.33 6.45. Cattle Not so Strong. Receipts of cattle were also small er, but about as many as required at this time. There was an indifferent demand for all kinds except the very best heifers, and trade from start to finish was sluggish at prices hardly as good as yesterday's. Steers, espec ially good kinds, sold anywhere from 10c to 25c lower than last week. The supply of medium cows was larger than necessary, and the market was dull, with a number unsold at the close. There was no chrnge in the market for stockers and feeding cat tie. Bulls were about steady and calves steady to 25c lower. Sheep Receipts Small. There was a falling' off in the re ceipts of sheep and lambs, compared with yesterday, but demand was only fair and trading was rather quiet at steady prices. Thus far this week there has not been much change in values of sheep, but lambs are fre quently 25c lower than the beginning of the week.
