RICHMOND MARKETS Canning factories in this vicinity have run preliminary packs of tomo toes. The packs, however, have not been full and will not be that until next week possibly not for two weeks. The early setting of tomatoes brought to the factories are of more than the average quality and size and will, packers say, make most desirable goods, both as canned tomatoes and as catsup. The September pack is most important of all, for the reason that it is the largest. Blossoms that will either fail to nlature or will form tomatoes for the September pack are now on vines and within ten days the extent of the September crop can be forecast with a fair degree of accuracy. Taken as a whole, the crop packers say promises to go far. beyond early expectations. This is no on account of length of the season, Vor the ten day curailment in planting is having Its effect. Quality and yield of individual vines, however, have rarely been better, and if this condition continues there will be a fair .yield of tomatoes packed by local factories. THE LOCAL MARKETS. INDIANAPOLIS MARKETS Publishers' Press Indianapolis. Aug. 22. Receipts, 10,000 hogs, 1,650 cattle and 1,200 sheep against 5,199 hogs, 1,635 cattle and 650 sheep a week ago and 4,865 hogs, 1,003 cattle and S9S sheep a year ago. Receipts of hogs were liberal, and although there was fair demand from both local and outside sources, conditions favored the bidding side. Shippers did not have much opposition at the start, bat buyers were operating freely at a decline of 5c to 10c, with most of the sales 10c lower. About he middle of the day the situation was weaker, but finally all kinds were selling strong at opening prices. There was more discrimination against grass hogs, and in some cases they sold 10c lower than corn fed hogs. Sales ranged from $6.35 to TG.Z2yz and the bulk of the supply sold nt $6.40Q6.45. Cattle Off Five to Ten Cents. Receipts of cattle were fair and all kinds were represented. There- was a small proportion of choice steers. There was lack of compeition, however, in cattle and most dealers reported the market weaker, with occasional sales 10c lower. Steers below top kinds did not show quotable change and there was also a steady market for stockers and feeders. There was a fair demand for bulls at steady prices. Calves were also steady. Large Receipts of Sheep. Receipts of sheep and lambs were much larger than they have been recently, but there was a good demand from all sources and with fair competition for fat stock of all that clas3 sold promptly at steady prices. There was less competition for the undesirable grades, which sold slowly and occasinally were 25c lower. Good to choice lambs sold from $6.507.00 and culls to medium grades at $3.00 6.25. NEW YORK MARKETS Publishers PressJ New York, Aug. 22. Opening prices in the stock market showed great irregularity and there was a renewal of yesterday's ; late selling in certain stocks. After the first five minutes, however, the market began to rise vigorously under the influence of a heavy demand for the Hill stocks, Pennsylvania and Amalgamated Copper. Materially higher prices were established before the inevitable realizing sales undermined the advances and caused sharp reactions. At the hight of the buying Great Northern preferred had been up 0z to 327-2. Anaconda 5, Colorado Fuel 2, St. Paul 2 and the Pacifies, Reading, Louisville and Nashville and Sugar 1 to 1 . Business shrank decidedly when prices began to sag, the reaction reaching 4 in Great Northern preferred, 4 in Anaconda, 3 in Northern Pacific and a point or thereabout in most of th eother stocks of any prominence. The market became dull, but was rallying. Higher rates for call and time loans caused a spirited selling movement Reading made precipitate drop to 140 and some other stocks that had been 1 to 2 points . above yesterday's closing fell as much below.
