A BOLD STEP. To overcome tbe well-grounded and reasonable objections of the more intelligent to the use of secret, niedicinal compounds, Dr. R. V. Pierce, of Buffalo, N. Y., some time ago, decided to make a bold departure from the usual course pursued by the makers of put-up medicines for. domestic use, and so has published broadcast and openly to the whole vorld, a full and complete list of all the ingredients entering into the -composition of his widely celebrated medicines. Thus he has taken His numerous patrons and patients into his full confidence. Thus too hehas absolutely awl completely removed his medicines from among Micret nostrums of doubtful merits, and made them Remedies cf Kno.n Composition. They are now In a class all by themselves being absolutely and -in every sen.se Non-secret. By thft bold step Dr. Pierce has shown that his formulas are of such excellence that he is not afraid to subject them to the fullest scrutiny. He allowed but five hits and was siven j.ood support, but luck seemed to be a.cainst him. Fairview got a good start and it looked like an easy victory, but the vision was short livei, for Burgess settled dowti after the first innins, and but one run was scored off him from then on. The Fairview team could not hit him when it most needed to. Twice with two men on base ynd two down, Wileoxen faced Durness only to fan the air. This would not have seemed ao bad had not Wileoxen on his first two times at the bat, secured pretty hits. The work of the Muncio catcher and second baseman was pretty to look at. The Kame threatened to be a ras chewinsr match. One of the points of contention came when Kngelb'ut ran for Kuhlenbeck .after Miller had started to do so. Vaudeville at the Phillips. Indications are that it will take a barrel of good size to hold the dimes and nickles that will pour into the hox office at the New Phillips this week, so attractive will he the bill that is to open this afternoon. It is not often that vaudeville patrons are provided with three first-rate sketch teams in a single hill, but that is the case this week, and if the program is not a rollicking, livelv one that will not permit of any of the spetators falling asleep, then the critics in other cities have either been writing at lor.p range or doing some tall lying. Lovers of the good old Irish comedr are to have their inning this week for Leonard and Fulton, who are among the leading exponents of this stvle of entertainment will present one of their gre.-est hits entitled "Mulligan's Masquerade." As a cure for the blues !t is said to have the "pink pill for pale people" business beat to a frazzle. And then Levin and Jackson have a comedy playlette that will depict some matrimonial troubles common to the human race hut which are ever laughabe when depicted by competent actors. as these are said to be. To top it all there are Barnes and Edwins in their travesty, "The New Tenant," and to make good measure Manager Murray throws in Clayton Hufford (weight two hundred pounds) in illustrated songs; Tom Macke, the minstrel; the Two Closes, acrobats and foot posturers and the Fhiloscone with motion pictures that are the newest thing out. What's the use to look any further if you are in search of entertainment? Isn't that a dime's worth? "A Wife's Secret" Gennett. In "A Wife's Secret," the emotional drama which comes to the Gennett Thursday night of this week, there is said to lie a combination of beautiful sentiment, humor and the pathos of a Poe the quaint character drawings of a Dickens combined with all the thrilling interest, of a Drury Lane melodrama. It is every day life of today, pure and simple, picturing real, living, breathing people, as one sees them off the stage. There is the beautiful girlish young wife, falsely accused through damaging circumstances, and driven from home by the husband she loves, living in poverty denied the sight of her child: there is the husband, an upright, hut uncom promising man; his maiden sist,er, a canting, vindicative hypocrite who urges him on to drive his girl wife away; the good whole-souled old "nigger-mammy" who accompanies the wife and comforts her in her hour of tribulation; the conscienceless knave whose forced attentions have been the cause of the husband's suspicions, and who takes advantage of the wife's unprotected state to try to accomplish her downfall: her unprincipled, unnatural father, a drunkard and criminal, who connives with her aducer; the loyal little newsboy and brave policeman who befriend her, and so on through the entire gamut, of human passions and sentiments. "A Wife's Secret," as seen for the past two seasons is staged in splendid style, with elaborate scenery and effects, and the company interpreting the various roles is said to be one of the best ever seen at popular prices. The title role is in the hands of Miss Grace Hopkins, one of America's most popular young emotional actresses, whose youth, beauty and talent, are said to make her admirably suited to the role of the girl wife. "Piff Paff Pouf" Gennett. The management of the musical cocktail, "Piff Paff Pouf," which will he one of the coming attractions at the Gennett with an excellent cast, is particularly proud of its chorus. It is pretty, lively, chipper and full of ginger. The little girls are dainty and pert; the large ones are stately and stunning; the men are tall and good looking and fine appearing. But, best of all, every one is a singer. All are trained to the minute, and the whole picture is more than usually atmospheric and a delight. "Piff, Paff Pouf is declared to be an unusual treat and as such, must interest Gennett patrons. "Dora Thorne" Gennett. Of the many books that Bertha M. Clay has written, none has had the popularity and has been so widely read as "Dora Thorne." This excellent love story has been dramatized by Lent B. Parker, and will be produced at the Gennett at an early date. This is the genuine Rowland & Clifford production .and company, which is a guarantee of its worth. No expense was spared in getting up the production and that the producing managers knew what they were about is shown by the excellen support the public is giving this splendid play. The success of "Dora Thorne." has been instantaneous and far beyond anything in the popular priced, amusement field this season. It is To Italy that the first establishment of banks is credited. These baDks were founded by Lombard Jews. Tbe name "bn.nk" is derived from' the word "banco," which originally was a terir applied to beaches net la the market place for the exchatige of meney. The first public bank was opened in Venice In 1550. The Bank of England was established in 1S93. Little XAila Care. Great care should be taker, of a ba bys nger nails. The Giants had no trouble in defeating the Springfield Browns yesterday afternoon, geting ll runs while the Buckeyes never broke into the score board.
