ISONER WAS PLACED ABOARD ASTEAMER AND TAKEN ASHORE IN SOMERSET COUNTY AND STRUNG UP. Publishers' Pressl Crisfield, Md., July 2S. William Lee, the colored youth who was sentenced to death in Baltimore three weeks ago for assaulting two women in Som erset county, who had been threatened with lynching, was hanged by Sheriff Brown on Smith's Island in the presence of his deputies and a few witnesses. The hanging was orderly. The mob that had threatened to burn Lee at the stake was completely outwitted by the sheriff. Lee's crime created unprecedented excitement throughout the eastern counties of Maryland, and for weeks the popular fury was such that Gover nor Warfleld deemed it prudent to have him confined in the Baltimore city jail as a protection from mob violence. As a further precaution, though it was necessary to carry out the sentence of the law in Somerset county, the scene of the crime, .the exact place of execution was kept secret except to those who were to accompany the sheriff, the culprit and witness. To carry out this purpose, Sheriff Brown appeared, in Baltimore, placed his prisoner aboard a steamer of the Maryland oyster navy and immediately sailed down the bay. He took with him a gallows, which had been bor rowed from Baltimore county and also a coffin and was prepared to hang Lee on the deck of the vessel, after reachi ng the waters of Somerset county, should there be any signs of a mob on shore. When the steamer appeared off Smith's Island, the prisoner was speed ily taken ashore, and the scaffold quickly erected by a carpenter, who had been brought from Baltimore for that purpose. The culprit, accompa nied by his spiritual adviser, was led up the scaffold, the noose was adjusted and the execution was quickly over. Lee confessed his crime. Held Crowd at Bay. Hartford, Conn., July 26. His house surrounded by several thousand men, including a large squad of policemen, none of whom appeared to try to cap ture him by force, John W. Dwyer, who shot and perhaps fatally wound ed Policeman Edward W. Beech'er, who had attempted to serve a commitment paper on him, surrendered, on the advice of his lawyer, after he had held the big crowd at bay for many hours. Dwyer and his lawyer came out of tba house, and entering an automobile, were driven to police headquarters, where Dwyer was locked up pending the outcome of Policeman Beecher's wounds. Constabla Charged With Murder.' Ironton, O., July 2 6. Constable Harry D. Smith, of Ashland, Ky., was ar rested in that city on a charge of mur der. He was brought to Ironton and committed to jail. Smith is charged with the murder of Carl Maneschien ast Saturday night. There are sever al witnesses who sayj they saw him empty Tils gun into , the crowd on the bank from the Bteamer Bonanza. Empty shells' picked up on the boat are exactly similar to those used by Smith in his revolver. Chief Kink is still In Cincinnati looking for Boat Policeman Richard Jones. Will Pay and Withdraw. San Francisco, July 26. The Prus sian National Insurance company of Stettin, Germany, has decided to with draw from California, at least for the present. At the office of the Prussian National in Oakland, it was stated that ' the company will not withdraw until all its losses have been adjusted. Moral Force Waning in Japan. Victoria, B. C, July 26. Miss Mary Crawford Frazer, who arrived here by the steamer Shinano, says the educa tional problem is becoming a serious one in Tokio. The insurbordination of the students, and waning of moral force is becoming a grave question. The students are given considerable trouble to the police by-banding them selves in cliques and becoming unruly. The settlement of Korean affairs Is also becoming a problem which is oc casioning considerable worry lb the Japanese government. Notice.
