11,000 hogs, 1,650 cattle and 550 sheep, against 9,265 hogs, 2,609 cattle and 1,145 sheep a week ago and 4,924 hogs, 1,057 cattle and 492 sheep a year ago. There was an increase in the mar keting of hogs and the supply was larger than the demand, which, from outside sources, was not as good as it has been, and packers were slow and indifferent bidders. In the cattle market there was a continued steady demand both . from local and outside sources for good to choice stock in all departments at fully steady prices. There was a very uncertain and narrow demand for common to medium cattle. All good kinds had found an outlet, but many undesirable cattle of all kinds were left unsold. Luken & Co. MUSIC AT SEA. Conditions Under Wkicb Shins Sails Sometimes 91ns. Some curious facts have been noted with regard to the sound conducting qualities of whips' sails. When ren dered concave by a gentle breeze, the widespread sails of a ship are said to be excellent conductors of sound. A ship was once sailing along the coast of Brazil, far out of sight of land. Suddenly several of the crew, .'while walking along the deck, noticed that when passing and repassing a particular spot they always heard with great distinctness the sound of bells chiming sweet music, as though being rung but a short distance away. Dumfounded by this phenomenon, they quickly communicated the discov ery to their shipmates, but none of them was able to solve the enigma as to the origin of these seemingly mys terious sounds which came to them across the water. Months afterward, upon returning to Brazil, the crew determined to satisfy their curiosity. Accordingly they men tioned the circumstance to their friends and were informed that at the time when the sounds were heard the bells In the cathedral of San Salvador, ! on the coast, bad been ringing to celebrate a feast held In honor of one of the saints. Their sound, wonderful to relate, fa vored by a gentle, steady breeze, had traveled a distance of upward of 100 miles over the smooth water and had been brought to a focus by the sails at the particular locality in which the eweet sounds were first heard. This is but one of several Instances of a similar kind, trustworthy authorities claiming that this same music Is often heard under somewhat the same circumstances and especially In a mois ture laden atmosphere. That is why the opinion is so prevalent that the world, economically considered, is so very much out of Joint But although there is so much unanimity in the opinion that wealth ought net to be distributed as It now Is, there Is still a wide diversity of opinion where there is any definite opinion at all as to how it really ought to be distributed. These opinions may, however, be reduced to three fundamentally distinct theories, which I shall call the aristocratic, the socialistic and the democratic, or llberalistic, theories. The aristocratic theory is that the good things of the world be long more particularly to certain groups or classes than to others by virtue of some circumstance connected with their birth or heredity and independently of their individual achievements. The socialistic theory is that wealth ought to be distributed accord ing to needs or according to some sim ilar plan arranged beforehand and independently of the individual - ability to acquire wealth in the rough and ready struggle of life. The democratic, or llberalistic, theory is that wealth ought to be distributed according to productivity, usefulness or worth. T. N. Carver in Atlantic. Violin.
