' Etlqnettc Anionic Forest Rangera, While in the forest reserve in which we hunted I met several of the forest ranger, all of them intelligent men, some with college education, men vhj seemed peculiarly adapted to their calling, who knew the mountains thoroughly, handy with an ax and gun and full of resources. A degree of ethic: obtained among the sportsmen, guides, trappers and forest rangers that was interesting. When any one goes to a deserted cabin, in most of which wouU be found food, bedding, a stove, etc.. It is proper form, for him to "stay all night, eat all he can put away under his belt, if in dire need divide any supply of tobacco and matches he may find, but he must take away nothing else, since to carry off au article of little value, such as hammer, hatchet, pinchers, snow glasses, screw driver, fish hook, pipe or other similar article might inconvenience the owner greatly when he happened along and wanted them and was forty miles or more from a source of supply. If a belated wanderer fails to wash the dishes and leave a supply of dry wood sufficient to build u fire and cook a meal he is at once tabooed and his companionship is not sought after. Northwestern Sport man. A Clever Crow. William Gale3 of Northwest Abbot. Me., has a tame crow that will cackle In exact Imitation of a hen and also bark like a hound.

Humor and Philosophy By DUNCAN M. SMITB

MAN, THE INSCRUTABLE. "Vori meet a man and talk to him For days and even years. Together smoke your brier pipes. Perhaps have several beers. But. though you seem to know him well Through many a friendly chat. You never dream what schemes are stored Away beneath his hat. Tou cannot gxiess, to watch his face. What visions stir his soul Or where ambition has marked out Aloft for him a roal. His only care would seem to be To get his dally bread. Tou never would suspect the plans That rattls In his head. He may have hoped some day to b A senator and sit Around the capitol as though He had been raised to it; Nor can you even make a guess From outward sirns you see But what beneath his hat may buza A presidential bee. You may be close to him for years And never see. a elgn That he has great ambitions in Society to shtne. Arobitionless he seems to be While resting In his chair. But he may have it all blocked out To be a millionaire. Another Soulless Combine. In these days when things are being reformed while you wait, although many of them never find it out, the latest thing that calls for smiting is a combine that has gathered to itself the pills, powder and lotions of the land and is now politely inviting us to pay the price or leave them alone, just as we see fit. Congress may know how to handle the drug trust, and we hope it does, but if it is open to advice we would suggest that it give the naughty combine a dose of quinine without any jelly once every hour until it throws up its hands and cries "Enough!" If this does not do the work in fourteen days there are some other drugs that you and I were obliged to take as children that it could sandwich In between for good measure. In other words, the drug trust should be given doses of its own medicine in large quantities and at regular intervals until cured. Instantaneous Shorthand. U2y "By my system you can get shorthand in thirty days." "Huh, I knew a fellow who beat that!" "Impossible." "It wasn't with him. He monkeyed with a buzz saw." When Inspiration Flags, Kind reader, did you ever alt And watch the moments lightly flit And try to think with all your might OI something very cute to write? The clock hands slowly moved along Much swifter than your Joke or song And you have In an hour or so Some paper clean and white to show. It's easy when you read a bit Of poetry or sparkling wit. Some one has dashed It oft, you think, But test the thing with pen and ink. Of course there's no such word as fail. But try a sonnet or a tale And eee, as they refuse to frame. The beauty of the writing game. You think and think and think soma more Until your intellect Is sore And wonder if you didn't miss Your calling when you took to this. The hour to go to press draws nigh, And still your copy hook is shy, So you fix up to make a show Some ancient joke and let 'er go. Case For the Surgeon. "Did he take the automobile accident to heart?" "Sure, he was all broke up over it" An Unusual Way. "When you buy a drink do you make It a practice to treat the bartender?" "Just with contempt." PERT PARAGRAPHS. A good boss is one that gets along without bossing. It would be Interesting to know -what kind of a courtship preceded "a mad marriage." a Who steals the thoughts of most writers steals trash. Keeping one's mouth shut is a time saving device. Some of us have so much to do to protect ourselves from our friends that we have no time " to consider our enemies. Whenever a man flings away ambition he is pretty apt to remember the spot where he tossed it. Dissatisfaction is the mother of investigation. Frankness and credulity are twin virtues that are apt to land their possessor in unpleasant places. A Modern Miracle. "Truly miraculous seemed the recovery of Mrs. Mollie Holt of this place," writes J. O. R. Hooper, Woodford, Teen., "she was so wasted by coughing up puss from her lungs. Doctors declared her end so near that her family had watched by her bedside forty eight hours; when, at my urgent request Dr. King's New Discovery was given her, with the astonishing result that improvement began, and continued until she finally completely recovered, and Is a healthy woman today."
