STOCK MARKET DURING PAST WEEK RECORDED SOME PCGI TIVE DECLINES. Publishers' Press New York, July 1. In spite of the active and promising condition of general business as well as a satisfac tory crop outlook, the stock market re corded some positive declines during the week just closed. Liquidation was the cause, prompted by unsatis factory monetary conditions and the evident selling of stocks for som time past on a liberal scale by prom inent holders. The decline was ac centuated by the liquidation of spec uiative accounts causing a more or less unsettled tone to the general mar ket. Little attention was paid to record-breaking July disbursements, which are usually depended upon to stiffen values and induce an Invest ment demand of more or less importance. At the moment the investment demand is indifferent, chiefly because shrewd buyers consider that prices have been too high and that, in view of the various conflicting influences, there may be opportunity to buy below the present level. There is consequently less confidence in the undertone of the market than for several months. It is true prices now show a considerable shrinkage from recent high records. Nevertheless, large operators are not bullish in their views; and, having parted with a considerable line of stocks, are not likely to re-enter the f.arket until a satisfactory decline is forthcoming. Another element working for low prices is the attitude of banking interests. The best banking opinion leans strongly toward a further contraction of loans, a closer scrutiny of collateral and strengthening of reserves. Credit has been greatly expanded for months past, and prudence now dictates greater care and discrimination in the making of loatfs. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET. Open. Close. Amal. Copper .. -.. . Am.
