EXPECTS SURRENDER CZAR TODAY Court Officials Recognize Situation in Russia and Changes Are to Come. NEW CABINET PROMISED MOST TERRIBLE NEWS COMES FROM BESSARABIA WHERE WOMEN ARE BEING OUTRAGED BEFORE BEING KILLED. Publishers' Press St. Petersburg, une 26. At last the court officials seem to have . been awakened to the significance of the recent demonstrations against the bureaucracy and it is expected that the Czar will today make a practically complete surrender to the douma. This fact is said to be absolutely authentic by members of the 'douma, and it is. asserted at present that the life of the present cabinet is nearlng an end. The staement comes from a high source that at the meeting at Peterhof today between the Czar and his advisers the reetgnation of the members of the present cabinet will be accepted. Before the end of the week it is confidently asserted there will be an entirely new state of affairs in the nation. President of the douma," Mouremtzeff, . is ,to bo the new premier and all bf the offices in the cabinet, with the possible exception of .the heads, of the war office and marine, will be chosen from the membership of the lower house of , parllment. ACTION WAS SURPRISE NO REASON IS ASSIGNED, BUT IT IS THOUGHT THE TEAM IS SORE OVER SATURDAY'S HEARTBREAKING DEFEAT, President Hill of the City League, has been notified by the management of the East Haven ball team that that organization had withdrawn from the league. No reason was assigned for the action and the managers of near ly all the teams in the league met at the Palladium office last evening expecting that Manager Harrison of the East Havens would appear on the scene and offer some reason for his action. However, he failed to appear. It is the opinion that the defeat of last Saturday at the hand3 of the Pan Handles, still rankles in the breasts of the East Haven players and for this reason they have decided to drop out of the circuit. Last evening three teams made ap plication, to the secretary of the league for East Haven's place, but no action will be taken until Thursday evening, when there will be a league meeting at the Palladium office at 7:30 o'clock. There Were Too Miany " Robinsons to Suit Him "K ANSAS is all right as a state, none better," said the Chicago drummer, "but there are cer tain neighborhoods one has to get acquainted with before things can run along smoothly. For instance, on my last trip I struck a town called Robinsonville. A street car drawn by a mule ran. from tbe station to the town. The fare was 7 cents." ' I kicked and had a row with the conductor: When I got uptown the landlord of .the only hotel refused to receive me as a guest. " 'What's the row?' I asked. " 'You sassed the conductor of the street car.' , ' "'Well, what of It?" ' . " 'We-are both. named Robinson and related.' . "I went out ifo a restaurant, but that was run by a Robinson, and I could get nothing to eat. There were three merchants in the town, and they wanted my goods, but they were named Robinson and refused to buy. . When I wanted to get back to the depot I could hire no boy to carry my grips. Too much Robinson. I was making for the train and carrying . my . luggage when I met a smiling man and stopped to say to him: " 'You don't look like a Robinson. "'Well," no; I'm not,' he replied. " 'Then I want you to listen while I cuss the whole caboodle of them. I never saw such a blamed town in my life. Why, sir' " 'Please don't, he interrupted. "But why?' ." 'Because I'm Jones the only Jones in town and If the Robinsons .heard that I was ag'in 'em they'd put the price of kerosene up to 30 cents and butter to 50 cents and the only Jones would have to eat dry bread and sit in darkness. Ten or fifteen years hence, when the Joneses have got a foothold' "And he smiled and bowed and waved his hand and passed on." Wise Girl. Now,. there was a certain girl, and she had three wooers. The first wooer said she was the whole world to him, but she frowned upon his suit. The second wooer said she was the sun, moon and stars, to him, but she bade him be on his way... "To me," said the third, "you are a young woman of agreeable manners, with eyes that might be a little bluer, with-a nose that is a wee bit puggy and with a few freckles and an annoying habit of blurting out your thoughts." She married the third wooer. Being pressed for an explanation of her conduct, she said: "My goodness! I think I was sensible. I married the only one that had courage enough to tell me of my faults before marriage Instead of waiting to throw them up to me afterward." New York Life. Natmral Deduction. A POTTERY TOWN.
Chtnpteeben Is lulike Any Other naee In China, 1 For at least 000 years the town Chingteehen, in China, has been devoted to the making of pottery. Everything in Chingteehen belongs to the iwrcelaiu and earthenware Industry. The houses are for the most part built cf fragment either of old kilns or of the fire clay covers In which the porcefain 13 stacked during firing. "The river bank is for miles covered with a deep stratum of broken chlnaware and chips of fire clay, and the greater part of the town and several square miles of the surrounding country are built over or composed of a similar deposit. Chingteehen is unlike anything else in China. The forms, the color; the materials used In the buildings, the atmosphere, ore reminiscent of the poorer parts of a civilized industrial center. There are 104 large pottery kilns in the town. The greater part are in use only for a short season In the summer. During this busy season the population of Chingteehen rises to about' 400,000 souls; but of this total nearly half are laborers drawn from a wide area of country, who come for the season, live in rows of barracklike sheds and do not bring their families with them. Visitors to Chingteehen pass along street after street where every shop Is occupied by men, women and children, all engaged in the designing, molding, painting or distributing of pottery. The river bank is crowded for three miles by junks either landing material and fuel or shipping the finished product. ' " ' NAVAL DISCI PLI NIL Panubmcnti That Are Meted Oat to British Sailors. For Infraction of regulations some curious punishments are meted out In the English navy. It Is an everyday occurrence, says London Tit-Bits, to seo half a dozen sailors lined up on deck' facing" tbe paint work, holding their hammocks on their shoulders. At first the hammock isn't heavy, but after an hour or so It drags on one's shoulders like lead. Besides, it is not at all entertaining to stare fixedly at a square foot of painted weodwork for an hour or more at a time. Another punishment that Jack despises is bailing with a spoon.' He is placed upon the deck, with two large wooden buckets, one filled with water and the other empty With a spoon he must dip all the water from one bucket and transfer it to the other, being. meanwhile, the butt of his comrades' jests and Jeers. Sometimes a delinquent is made to walk slowly backward and forward along the deck, nursing in his arms a 6lx inch proje'etiie, weighing a little over 100 pounds. ' Once a sailor, who laughed at the stammering speech of his commander, was made to stand upon the forebridge, In full view of the ship's crew, and laugh for an hour and a half.- - " Spitting upon the deck of a man-of-war 13 strictly prohibited. Cuspidors are placed at intervals along the deck, and these must be used. Upon some ships, when a sailor i3 caught spitting upon the deck, a small tub is strapped to his chest, and he Is made to wear it. Any one who chooses 'may use 'this walking receptacle. -The offender'thus punished rarely repeats bis offense.' : - GODFREY'S TANKARD. Seventeenth Century Relic o the Plag-ne In London. A curious historical relic of London is the large tankard of solid silver, pre sented by Charles II. to Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey for his valuable services during the plague and the fire of London, for.which he received the honor of knighthood in 1660. The tankard, which is of plain silver, has a hinged cover and weighs nearly tnlrty-slx ounces. Its front la engraved with the royal arms and the crest, of the recipient, together with inscriptions in Latin and engravings of scenes connected with the fire, which are still In excellent preservation. . The engraving of the pesthouse men carrying corpses to the dismal plague pit and that of the crowded blocks of houses surmounted by flames are very quaint and curious. Sir Edmund, who was born in 1621 at Selllnge, in Kent, was a , timber merchant, possessing wharfs at Dowgate city and at Charing Cross, ne prospered, became .Justice of the. peace for Westminster, and member of parliament for Wlnchllsea. In history, as no reader of Macaulay and Green will need to be told, his name is most famous in connection with his mysterious murder, which was popularly attributed to the zeal with which he had devoted himself to unraveling the alleged popish plot. His body was found In a ditch near Primrose hill, face downward and penetrated by his own sword, under circumstances which precluded the Idea of suicide or robbery. The excitement caused by thia still mysterious event is indicated by , the fact that when the funeral procession left . the city, with great pomp and pageant, for the burial ground of St Martin's-in-the-Felds, it was preceded by 70 clergy and followed by upward ft 1,000 persons of distinction. JL young and smart looking Scotch clergyman was to preach a 'trial"- sermon In a strange church. Fearing that his hair might be disarranged or that he might hare a "smudge on his face, he said, to the sexton, there being no mirror, in the vestry, "James, could you get me a glass?". James disappeared and after a few minutes returned with something under his coat, which, to the consternation of the divine, he produced in the form of a bottle, saying. "Ye manna let on aboot it, meenlster, for I got It as a special favor, and I wadna hae got it at all if I had na told them it was for you." Harper's Weekly. Stni Time. Burroughs Say, old man, there was a time when you promised to share your last dollar with me. . RIchley That's all right I haven't got down to it yet. - . Tbe latter has no effect. It being simply a white powder to give body to the acid The ink can be used with a rubber hand stamp, and It should be allowed to remain fifteen minutes, when the barium will brush off, leaving the design on the glass. The Greek Tear. The Greek year consisted of twelve months of twenty-nine and thirty days alternately. Three times In eight years a month was added to make up the deficiency. Coclcawaln. Cockswain was originally , the man who pulled the after oar of the cap tain's boat, then known as "cock boat." "Cock boat" is a corruption of the word "coracle," and, as most people know, the coracle is a small, round boat used for fishing on some of the Welsh rivers. So cockswain comes to us from the Welsh. No ecclesiastical hierachy Is maintained at the public expense, nor Is there any priesthood attached to the Confucian religion, although that is the state religion.
