WATERMELON CROP
One of the Richmond Commission houses yesterday received the "Watermelon prospectu," which indicates that the supply of Southern melons that will reach Richmond will be short. The letter comes from Mabbett and Groover, of Quitman, Ga., the biggest watermelon commission house in the South. Tho letter in part says: We have investigated the watermelon condition in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina and find: Florida acreage about the same as last year. There is an increase In the extreme Southern belt, but these melons will be out of the market before the Georgia melons begin t) move. The acreage in the middle and northern section shows a decrease of at ' least 35 per cent, and crop ten days late,. The Georgia crop is the light5st in years and is at least 40 per cent off in acreage. Stands are irregular and the yield bids fair to be under the average. The crop is from ten days to two weeks late. In South Carolina the acreaga is reported to be one-third less than last year. Shipments from Georgia will not be general before July 1st. In this immediate section, a few cars will move from the 20th to the 25th of June.
