BALTIMORE IN THE ROLE OF THE FABLED PHENIX. The city of Baltimore, which was devastated by fire two years ago, has shown very commendable enterprise in rebuilding the burned district Splendid new skyscrapers now stand where smaller structures stood before the fire. In the picture fire ruins are yet to be seen beside some of the new buildings.

AT THE THEATERS Vaudeville at the Phillips. Charles Hotter and Company, presenting a comedy playlet, are the feature of this week's program in vaudeville at tho New Phillips, although the offering is satisfactory throughout. The Botters put on a comedy based on an estrangement between husband and wife, all imaginary, he taking tho part of the lawyer consulted by both for dtvorce. The situations are highly amusing and the partv are taken with ability. The Hlrchhorne, Alpine entertainers have a novel act, including music on odd instruments and vocal numbers. Hugel Brothers, comedy acrobats, are among the best in this line that have visited the New Phillips. Corrlgan and Hays furnish the blackface, portion of the bill, singing and dancing. J. L. Mack, known as the Irish minstrel, gives musical numbers that aro pleasing. The illustrated songs this week, sung by Miss Leona Thompson, are "When the Frost is on the Pumpkin" and "In the Valley Where , the -Bluebirds sing," and the motion pictures as shown by the Philoscope aro "Two Little Waifs," showing the adventures of children stolen by gypsies and their final rescue; "Parott's Revenge," a love affair, and "A Boarding School Conspiracy," in wheh youngsters make the instructor step lively, culminating In a nightshirt race in which the police take part. GREAT FRAUD IS CHARGED STATE AGENCY COMPANY Declared That the Stockholders are Forced to Protect Themselves Against the Action of the Directors of the Corporation.' Palladium Special. Indianapolis, June 11. Stockholders of the State Agency Company at a meeting held in the Saks Building Sunday to organize for protection against what they regard as a fraud on the part of the directors of the company, discovered cause for additional agitation in an alleged scheme involving $259,000 more than the original sum of $250,000, which, they say, several of the directors intended to put to a wrong use. It is said to have developed at the meeting that the sum of $250,000 first mentioned as a cause for grievance was a payment merely for an option on certain insurance territory, and that had the contract been closed the company would have been pledged to pay an aggregate sum of S509.000. of a restraining order by the Superior Court Saturday prohibiting the company from entering into a contract with Otto L. Vanlaningham for the exculsive right to certain insurance territory in the Southwest It was alleged that Vanlaningham had obtained the contract in his individual name from the State Life Insurance Company and was in a conspiracy with the directors of the State Agency Company, of which he is also a director, to sell them the contract in a fraudulent manner. The stjm mentioned was $250,000, but the stockholders say the deal would have cost them an additional $259,000. "PURPLE PRINCE" HIGHLY PLEASING (Continued From Page One.) evil, until the blood of the gallery critics ran through their veins like ice water. Mr. Zwissler blushingly acknowldeged that last evening was the first time he has ever appeared in any production in tights. Messrs. Zwissler and LIchtenfels on the stage looked like Wayne County and Texas roaming about together and their acting was one of the distinct features of the production. All Were Meritorious. It would be a long taie to sound the merits of all the principals, but it can be briefly stated that all of them played their parts "for ail that was in it." The "Purple Prince" is founded on the usual comic opera plot, but its lyrics are tuneful and catchy and the lines bright and Infectious. The costuming was splendid and the singing of the big, well trarined chorus formed an excellent support to the principals. The play will be repeated again this evening. The Cast. uNUSUALLY URGE CROWD SEES PLAY

Earlham Chapel Crowded to Capacity Limit at Entertainment Last Night. IONIAN-PHOENIX PUBLIC POPULAR SUCCESS OF BEUMONT FLETCHER WELL PUT ON LIST OF THOSE WHO TOOK PART IN ENTERTAINMENT. The farce comedy "The Knight of the Burning Pestle" as given by the Ionian and Phoenix literary societies of Earlham last night, drew one of the largest crowds ever assembled in the chapel in Lindley Hall. The play which is one of the Beu-mont-Fletcher successes gives much room for excellent acting and this was well done last night The story of the play runs as follows: Venturewell a merchant, discharges his apprentice, Jasper, because he is in love with his daughter, Luce, whom he desires to marry to Humphrey. Luce promises to marry Humphrey if he steals her away and takes her to Waltham Forest, where, however, she has planned to meet Jasper. At this point Ralph the grocer apprentice, afterward the Knight of the Burning Pestle assumes this character. Humphrey finally steals Luce away from her father, but Jasper surprises him and takes the girl away from him. While Jasper and Luce are in the forest he decides to test her love. 'His plan takes an unexpected turn and Luce is retaken by her father. Ralph again appears and has a conflict with a barber giant. Jasper then by his cunning, steals Luce from her father after she has " been betrothed to Humphrey Venture well then makes amends to Jasper's father and Luce and Jasper are at once united and are married. Special Mention Given. The work of Had?elgh Marsh as Ralph, The Knight of the Burning Pestle was very good and he and W. E. Elliott as Merrythought, the father of Jasper kept the house In a roar of laughter. All those students taking parts in the play carried their parts well and it is by the closest 6bservance that any discrimination can be made as to which carried their parts the best. The following is the cast: Speaker of Prologue. .Grover Grimes A Citizen Isaac Stanley His Wife Mary Jenkins Ralph, His Apprentice Hadleigh Marsh Boy Ernest Neave Servant Lois Pitts Venturewell, a Merchant . Birnc -- Spradling Humphrey Clyde Allee Merrythought Wm. Elliott Jasper, His Son .Horace Hedges Tim, Apprentice Esta Pearson George Apprentice ....Edward Doan Matron Rema Stone Barber-Giant Sidney Hutton Captives Durward Eaton, Maurice Jones, Ruth Moore, Myra Cope. Palladium Special. Indianapolis, June 11. A special dispatch from Washington says that James E. Watson, whip of the house, has been making a careful study of the political situation as it affects the probable personnel of the house of representatives to be elected this year. He is unable to find any reason for apprehension that the Democrats will capture the house. "I have made a painstaking calculation," said he, "and the result shows that there is no occasion to fear that the control of the house will slip away to the Democrats. "Counting, but not. conceding, that we shall lose six Republican congressman in New York, two in Indiana, six in Pennsylvania, six in Illinois, two in Pennsylvania, six in Illinois, two in Iowa, five in Ohio, one in Minnesota, one in Wisconsin, one in Nebraska, one In Kansas, one in North Carolina, six in Missouri, one in Kentucky, one in Massachusetts and one in Maryland, making a total loss of forty-one congressmen, we shall still have a clear majority of thirty-two in the house of representatives."
