The people are beginning to buy more cherries," said a grocer yester-, day, "but they are not using as many as they should In view of the situation. Cherries are now selling for $1.75 a crate In boxes twenty-four to the crate. They aer good stock. Cherres dipen much more rapidly, after they once start, than other fruits and can not be kept. They must. be used Shortly aftter being picked. When one man's cherries get ripe, practically all cherries are ripe, for there is not much difference in varieties or In time of yielding of trees. Tnere is, as a 'result of this, a glutting of the market for a short time then cherries become scarce again. Last year people put off buying cherries when they were $1.50 and $1.75. thinking they would be cheaper. The following week practically all cherries had been picked and the price went straight to $4.00.- There never was a decline. Receipts, 8,000 hogs, 1,300 cattle and 400 sheep against 5,551 hogs, 933 cattle and 167 sheep one week ago, and 9.361 hogs 854 cattle and 189 sheep one year ago. The hog market closed strong to 5 cents higher. The top was $665, but this was only on one load. Cattle Market Active. The cattle market was active, vet prices remained unchanged from yes terday. Receipts were only fair, but buying was brisk at all times, and an outlet for all good Kinds was made. Sheep Were Stronger. Receipts of sheep and lambs were liberal. Cattle There was a light run of cattle in for the market today 350 head, against 569 head a week ago, 575 head two weeks ago and 473 hcfid. a year ago. Local buyers mrnifested little interest, as is generally the case on Thursday, and the movement was quiet. Bulls Market slow and weak to 10c lower under light demand and ample supply. Calves Good demand and market active at steady and strong prices. Hogs Receipts of hogs were small for this time in the year; even for the fourth day of the week. Naturally a stronger tone developed, and all grades opened selling readily at -an average of a strong nickel advance over yesterday's late prices. Special cable and telegraphic communications received by Bradstreet's show the following changes in available supplies as compared with previous accounts: Wheat United States and Canada, east of the Rockies, decreased 1,543,000 bushels; afloat for and in Europe decrease 4,000,000 bushels; total supply decreased 5,543,000 bushels. Corn United States and Canada, east of the Rockies, increased 1,180,000 bushels. Oats United States and Canada, east of Rockies, decreased 910,000 bushels. The leading decreases reported this week are 327.000 bushels at the Chicago private elevators. 103,000 at Ft. Worth and 98.000 bushels in Manitoba. Stocks held at Port Huron Increased 90,000 bushels and those at Portland, Me., increased 52,000 bushels. Publishers' Press Chicago, June 7. The oats market was strong and ex cited. The opening prices fluctuated over a range of 1 cent. The reports of damage which came in early, caus ed lively covering by shorts and created a heavy demand. BULGE IN NEW YORK CENTRAL AND CONTROLLED ISSUES OTHER RISE . Publishers' Pressl New York, June 7. There were sev eral sharp gains over last night at the opening of the stocs market, while the general range, was a small frac tion higher; Illinois Central rose 2, Great Northern prefered, Denver & RIo Grande and Locomotive about a point, and Baltimore & Ohio, Chicago Union Traction preferred, Smelting and Consolidated Gas large fractions. The early demand showed the best effect in the standard railroad stocks particularly in important leaders of the grangers, Pacific, Southern and trunk line groups. The advance in these was retarded at times by the pressure against other stocks, such as coppers and some other metal stocks The general market was showing a good tone, weak stocks rallying in sympathy with the rise in Union Pad .flc. C. & L. figured have been very quiet of late, and at present there are no indications as to what will be done as to final disposition of. the properties. One phase of the diffi culty growng out of the receivership was to have been heard at Cincinnati Monday, but was postponed. The hearing which probably will be held on Monday of next week has been authorized by Judge Horace Lurton of the Unltew States Court. The Pere Marquette, it is said, will seek to show by expert testimony that the Chicago, Cincinnati & Louisville was not properly built and that heavy locomotives could not operate on the road, and that it is, therefore, not worth the price named in the bill of sale.
