HUMORED SALE OF THE D. & W. The Weidner Elkins Syndicate Said to be Ready to Act. PROPERTY IS VALUABLE SAID THAT PURCHASE PRICE WILL BE APPROXIMATELY $3,000,000 WINTERS DOES NOT DENY. The Dayton Journal in speaking of the reported sale of the Dayton & Western, says: "Rumors are again circulated relative to the sale of the interests of the Dayton & Western Traction Company In the railway connecting this city with Richmond. Ind. Heretofore they have been strenously denied and eventually found to have been without foundation. Negotiations have now been entered and the outright sale to the Weld-ner-Elkins syndicate within the near future is by no means a remote possibility. When asked by a Journal reporter relative to the matter President Valentine' Winters did not deny the fact that negotiations were on, and fact assumed an attitude that lent color , to the report that steps have been Inaugurated with a view to the sale of the valuablbe property. While he did not state the amount of the consideration for which the 'transfer would bo made, it has .been known '.what value1 he has heretofore putpon the property, and it is reasonable to assume that the purchase price, -if sold, will not vary widely from $3,000,000." EARLHAM REJOICES in FIRST ANNUAL The "Sargasso" Is Given Over to Students with Appropriate Exercises. CREDITABLE PRODUCTION BOOK IS DEDICATED TO PROF. WILLIAM N. TRUEBLOOD, HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AT THE COLLEGE. The "Sargasso" the first college annual of any importance at Earlham was issued yesterday. The last chapel exercises. of the year were given over to the Sargasso presentation. The period was the ; most enthusiactic of any held in the chapel this year and if results of this meeting count for anything the Sargasso' wilf be published again. In an enthusiastic speech Laurence Smelser introduced Howard Burgess, the editor of the Annual. As Mr. Burgess rose to speak he was greeted by cheers from his fellow students. In a very appropriate speech Mr. Burgess thanked' the students. for the reception he ' received. In a few well chosen words he then presented a copy of the Sargasso bound in full leather, to Prof. William Newby Trueblood, to whom the first annual is dedicated Mr. Trueblood is the most popular professor in Earlham, and the students showed by their long and loud applause , that f they were heartily in sympathy with the staff's choice. Owen Kuhn. business manager, made a short speech.. stating why and how the Sargasso should be published each year. At the close of his ' remarks he presented a souvenir volume of the book.toMr. Howard Burgess, the editor in chief. Bert Annual J- the, State. The Sargasso is without a doubt the best annual in , the state ('considering the size of the school from which it is issued. The tiook is a handsome one being abound in grey buckram with "The Sargasso" and "Earlham 06" embossed on the cover in dark green. The most noticeable feature of the book is the literary material and the excellent arrangement of the con tents. The book reviews mainly . the history of the past year. but part of it is. given over to 'Earlham as it. used to be. It Is Illustrated profusely with pictures of the faculty, classes and organizations in the school. The original art work is 'very neat. 'and the excellent pen drawings by Mr. Laurence Smelser are in evidence throughout the edition. Taken as a whole the i book is -a very creditable oneand;is worthy of Earlham's position" in 'the tedr.cational world. LECTURE

Noted Socialist Gives Answers to Ten Objections to Party's Views. ' DIVISION NOT NECESSARY SPEAKER HOLDS THAT RAIL- i ROADS, MINES AND OTHER INDUSTRIES CAN BE CONDUCTED COOPERATIVELY. Gertrude Greslau Hunt, of Chicago, who has been lecturing in Richmond under . the , auspices of the " Socialist party gave her closing talk last night at -the I. O. F. Hall In her 'talk last night she ' gave the ' Socialist , answer to ten . objections which she said were commonly advanced ' against their opinions'" In part 'Mrs' Hunt said: "Socialists do not propose to divide up, rather 'to go into business as a municipalities as states or nations, produce the means of life at cost and stop dividing upthe wealth the workers produce with those who never toil r It is no more necessary to divide up . to own and operate coal mines, railroads and steel machinery, together that it ' was when we '. began to operate public schools, fire departments streets and bridges We divided up with the railroads last year $662,-' 000,000 profits and with Rockefeller $50,000,000, a taxing J power h greater than any ruler ever 'possessed Don't Destroy.Worthy, Incentive. "Socialism would not ! destroy . any worthy incentive, onlyevil incentives which no community has a moral right to furnish. The, incentive to provide homes . beautiful, hygienic and convenient, to rear strong, Intelligent well equipped children, to provide leisure and means 1 for study, travel and music, to preserve " health and happiness would be . present; - the incentive to' graft, adulterated foods, war, child-labor i and adult idleness, ignorance, prostitution, intemperance and robbery would ' all be lacking, when no one owned our means of life and could make no profit out of the community, then no one would desire to poison and adulterate our foods. No one will face a cannon for $13.00 a month to extend markets for goods he has produced and is suffering for, when he can enter a splendidly equipped factory and produce $500.00 a month. No one will pay Baer $7.50 for a ton of coal when he can get It from a national mine for $2.00. No one will work for Carnegie producing $10.00 per day and receiving $2.00 when he can employ himself In a collective industry and get the $10.00 he produces. "Socialists do not stir up class hatred,; but search for the cause and strike to remove it that our race may enter into a state where jungle ethics do not 'prevail, where all will be producers unless too young or aged or ill and all will be joint owners of 'capital and thus be secure in the private ownership of what . they produce. This would forever end the strife between-capitalists and workers. - Not Opposed to Religion. "Socialism Is not opposed to religion or the churches. It is no more opposed to religion than to own our great mills, mines and stores together than it is to own water systems, electric light plants and postal service and run these without rent, dividends or profits. "A co-operative commonwealth will ' make possible the i living of the Golden Rule and is the only way to apply -the -.teachings; of Jesus, to our social life - as' well as to our r individual lives."
