A BEAUTIFUL NEW YORK MODEL In New York scores of young women and little girls earn a livelihood posing for photographers. One of Ihe most attractive models is a beautiful girl who has posed for many very artistic photographs taken by Schloss. Her most effective picture is given herewith.

AT THE THEATERS Vaudeville at the Phillips. At an outlay considerably out of the ordinary the Original Bootblack Quartet, which has just closed an engagement in Chicago, has been secured for vaudeville at the New Phillips this week and much in the way of enter tainment is expected from them. This quartet is noted for its work in comedy, its dancing and singing. Parish the premier ventriloquist, will present his famous ' funny figures and in ad ditlon McKee and Van will appear in black face, singing and dancing; the Two Alets will present some high class character changes, introducing singing, dancing and juggling; Ames and Feathers will appear as comedy acrobats; Miss Leona Thompson will sing illustrated songs and the Philo scope will show the latest motion pic tures. Despite the heavy competition that is offered in various lines this week, good business is anticipated. . Vaudeville ct the Gennett. Anna Barton and Company will no doubt prove an especially pleasing feature to patrons of the Gennett vaudeville this week, if there is dependence put in the advance notices that are given Miss Barton and her assistants. They are eccentric German dialect comedians and .present "The Professor and the Scrub Lady," said to be a highly amusing affair. There are various other good things.cn tho bill, including the O'Kura Wonders, who are marvelous Japanese foot balancers and jugglers, previously with some of the best known circuses of the country; W. J. McDermott, a tramp comedian in songs and stories and a burlesque imitation of Sousa; Delmore and Darrell, novelty change act; Ethel Gilkey, vocalist; Ernest Renk in illustrated songs, two new ones, and the motion pictures, which this week are "The Bicycle Robbers" and "The Newsboys." f Savins Masara. The question as to whether Niagara should be used solely as a source of mechanical power or be preserved as a beautiful and wonderful natural feature has come up in our day for permanent decision. Thsre are some minds that have decided for themselves In favor of the former proposition, but they seem fortunately to be in a minority both in Canada and in the United States. Niagara Is to be preserved both In what have been called its "little loveliness" and in Its grandeurs. America Is "practical." It has allowed Its forests to be dangerously diminished, it has allowed Niagara to be seriously threatened, but American centiment when once aroused is irresistible, and American sentiment has declared In favor of Niagara as Niagara. Century. Collecting; Fares In Montreal. The manner of collecting the fare on street cars In Montreal is decidedly unique. Under no circumstances can the conductor touch the fare, which must be deposited by the passenger in a fare box, which is presented as the passenger enters the door of the car. The conductor will make change or sell tickets, but the passenger deposits the fare, whichever it may be. In the box. The coin or ticket does not fall until the conductor presses a button. This gives opportunity to see if the amount is correct and the coin genuine. When once the coin drops It cannot be removed except in the company's office. After the cashiers cotmt the day's receipts the count is checked by w eighing the different coins and also the tickets. A Vtir aid m Bottle. Canon Tristam, the distinguiebed English ornithologist who died recently, kept among his treasures an ordinary soda water bottle that once served him In good stead, according to the Buffalo Commercial. Once on his travels he seized upon what he thought was a lizard In the sand, but which proved to be a deadly horned riper. His Greek boatman, scared almost to death, offered no assistance. Suddenly spying an empty soda water bottle, the canon, with great presence of mind, forced the head of the reptile down the neck and slowly uncoiled the remainder Of Its anatomj'froro frta hand

SEIBEL SHOW IS HEBE

WILL DELIGHT THOUSANDS. Street Parade This Forenoon will be Especially Pleasing to the Children Great Dog and Pony Circus to Remain in the City Two Days. The Barnum of all dog and pony shows in the latest tented exhibition to seek fame in the amusement field. Three progressive and successful young business men, the Seibel Bros, of Watertown, Wis., are the new seekers after renown from the saw-dust arena, and from all reports thev are reaping a harvest of good American dollars, presenting a great show with their wonderful dogs, ponies and monkeys, some two hundred in number ,and are rapidly winning a name which will soon be one to conjure with The Seibel shows will spend today and tomorrow in this city, making their initial bow before a local audience this afternoon. The show reached Richmond yesterday from Indianapolis and the tenis are pitched at Eighteenth and Mala streets. Not alone in the ring performance of the Seibel show a top notcher, but the "animal actors" giving it are said to be marvels for beauty, intelligence and obedience. Among the ponies is little "Snow Cloud," the smallest full grown thoroughbred Shetland pony in the world. Kokomo, said to be the nearest approach to man which the ape world ha3 produced, Is. the greatest of the monkeys, and Scout, the wonderful tramp dog, takes the center cf the stage as the bright particular star of the canine contingent. The street parade, which occurs at 11:30 o'clock, tells its own story in mina. ture. Magyar 91 a sic. Of Magyar art music seems to have gained the widest admiration, and it is certain that musical executants of the first order, and in the case of Liszt of unique grandeur, have Justified part of the expectations with which musical Europe has long looked upon Hungary. Magyar music can be likened to nothing more aptly than to the exclusively Hungarian river Thelss. Capricious and majestic, teeming with life and silting up for miles, surrounded by charming floriture of water lilies and alder trees and suddenly again by poisonous marshes and swamps, such is the Theiss, such is Hungarian musicstirring, bewildering, unspeakably saddening. Inexpressibly exhilarating. It is the music of rhapsodic souls, of intoxication, of the battlefield, of wild war dances after the victory. But, like the great river, tt cannot be regulated. Nineteenth Century. Sunlight For All the Leave. The telegraph plant of India has a method all its own for catching the sunshine. Each of its leaves Is composed of thrf-e leaflets. The larger terminal one erects itself during the day and turns sharply down at night, while the other two smaller leaflets move constantly day and night, describing complete circles with a peculiar jerking motion like the second hand of a watch. Occasionally they rest for a period and then go on again, thus bringing every part of every leaf to the fgll action of the sunlight. Mere Trifle. "Folks all well this morning. Tommy?" asked a friend of the family. "Yes'm," replied Tommy. "I am glad to har it The last time I heard from them your papa wag suffering from rheumatic gout and your mamma had neuralgia." "Oh, yes, they've still got em. I thought you meant was any of - us sick." ' Tho Gentlemam. It Is possible for every man to assume an elegant manner, but the true gentleman Is nature's own nobleman, who never forgets to be polite to every one, and It Is as easy to discern the assumed from the Innate good breeding as it is to distinguish pasta Croat diamonds. "About two weeks ago,", said Mr. Elmendorf, "I went over from Jersey City. Tho tide was running rather strong in the river and our pilot missed his mark at Twenty-third street. In some way our boat got wedged almost at right angles In the ferry slip. Of a sudden we heard the sonorous voice of the pilot as he bellowed to the roustabouts on the dock to 'Heave a line.' That our American forests abound In plants, tho roots ot which possess the most valuable medicinal and curative virtues, .9 abundantly attested by scores of the mast eminent medical writers and te&choi of our age. Even tho untutored Indians had, by Intuition and experiment, discovered tho usefulness of many native plants before the advent of the white race on this continent. It is no longer thought necessary that a medicinal agent, in order to bo good and useful, must have been brought across the ocean or that "being carried seven times across tho Sahara Desert on tho backs of fourteen camels" makes it tho more valuable. Dr. Pierce believes that our American forests abound in most valuable medicinal roots for the cure of most of our obstinate and most fatal diseases, if we would properly investigate them; and, in confirmation of this firm conviction, he points with pride to the almost marvelous cures effected by his "Golden Medical Discovery," which has proven Itself to bo the most efficient stomach tonic, liver lnvlgorator, heart tonic and regulator, and blood cleanser known to med ical science.
