A Year of Blood.

The year 1903 will long be remem

bered in the home of F. ?J. Taclcet, of

Alliance, Ky., as a year of blood; which flowed so copiously from Mr.

Tacket's lungs that death seemed very

near. He writes: "Severe bleeding

from the lungs and a frightful cough

had brought me at death's door, when

I began taking Dr. King's New Discbv-

Publisher!. Press") -New York, May 27. Henry Clews in h"s financial review for the week says: x . "The important feature of the week was the satisfactory working out of money market problems. A most sip nificant event was the placing of a $50,000,000 Pennsylvania loan in Paris. This is the first time in many years that French capital has ventured with any freedom into American securities. Another unexpected problem is also being solved, and that is the financing of insurance losses resulting from the San Francisco fire. The total insurance payments on this account are es timated at nearly $180,000,000, rf which about $100,000,000 will fall upon American companies. The strain upon American insurance companies has of course, been very severe, especially upon the smaller concerns; and were it not for the remarkable prosperity of the country, which brought 3,001-

times to the companies and enabled-

stockholders to make good the losses the results would have been disasterous to some of the lesser American in

surance companies.

So far as trade conditions are con

cerned they areentirely satisfactory to

Wall Street. Speculative activity ic being conducted on more conservative lines, and the leading banking inter

ests are still disposed to discourage extravagant expectations. In the C'jal

stocks there has been much strengtn.

backed by rumors of important devel

opments in the coal trade. The de

mand for railroad bonds continues

somewhat disappointing, partly owing

to conditions n the money market and

partly owing to the large amounts sflll held by syndicates awaiting purchasers.
